Chevy's Silverado AD Eh?? Pulling A Train Eh??

On the weekend I was watching TV and I saw a commercial for Chevy's 2007 Silverado Heavy Duty. The truck didn't have any HiRail equipment or any boogies beneath the bumpers, just a coupler, tires on rails and probably 10+ empty rail cars behind it.

The Silverado HD has a Allison 1000 is rated to handle up to 620 ft·lbf (841 N·m) of torque. So how long do you think it can handle all that pressure. What would happen if someone tried it??

GOOD job GM makes me and probably you railfans want to go and get one so we can pull probably 8 empties and 3 fulls, instead od going on eBay to bid on a A Trackmobile 4150 unless you want to. LOL S

The gearing ratio is totally insufficient to generate enough torque. Traction would also be very poor with rubber tires.

If a VW Touareg can pull a 747, I'm tempted to think a Chevy 3500HD with Hi-Rail equpiment could pull 8 cars.

Anyone remember the ford commercial when they pulled a plane behind them and it started to fly? I heard that it really happened. They just had to weigh the truck down and get it up to like 150 mph.

Well, with the VW, they had to put about 4 tons of ballast in it, then increase the tire pressure to handle the weight. It got up to about 5MPH, any faster than 10MPH and the tires would explode. So, I doubt a Ford Pickup could even go 150 unburdened, let alone pulling an aircraft.

A commercial that I thought was worse was for the NHL during the Stanley Cup Playoffs ... they show a car speeding along a dirt road and then they come up to a crossing where there is a train coming (at high speed). What do they do? They gun it ... and go flying (literally!) over the crossing. Right then, the scene flips to players checking each other into the boards/glass. What kind of lesson are they teaching people?

FWIW, the commercial seemed to disappear halfway through the playoffs. I hope OLI made them remove it.

Car companies do stuff like this (and get in hot water for it) all the time. There was another ad (don't remember which company, but I think it was an American one) that showed some snow covered streach of highway somewhere, with a snow plow working on it, and then the car the ad was for speeds up from behind the plow, and passes it. The ad was pulled after the highway departments of a western state complained. Out there passing a snow plow is in the same catagory of stupid as trying to beat a train at a crossing.

And speaking of stupid car ads, how about that GM ad with the robot from this year's super bowl? Way to make fun of all the workers you laid of GM. Sure, they cut out the suicide scene when they reaired it, but it's still an ad about an auto worker getting fired (for a minor mistake) and having to take low paying and demeaning service jobs because of it. This is supposed to make me buy a GM? The only thing that ad would be good at selling is the Employee Free Choice act. There's a very good chance if I'm buying a new car in the near future it won't be a GM because of that ad. It will never amaze me how brtually tone deaf the American auto industry is.

When I worked at a grain elevator many, many years ago I used to move and spot loaded grain cars with a small ford diesel tractor with no problem. On level track rail cars roll very easily. Remember Charles Atlas pulling the obsevation car of the New York Central`s Twentieth Century Limitied.

This morning I was on "the Pig" an all TOFC consist rated for 70 mph. I love looking out the window and see the looks on truckers faces as I pass them with over a mile of truck trailers in tow.
