Just goes to show that having the top of the line equipment doesn't necessary make someone a good photographer.

Obviously PCA material right here. Such technique wows me...

Glossiest engines on the planet (Simonized like the old Detroit and Mackinac's Alcos, perhaps?) given nuclear-blast enhancement. The rest of the scene isn't bad at all.

Lots of views and faves as well. It must have been featured on FB. Maybe they were liking the engine more than the photo.

If I remember, that was the first photo to appear after the unit was unveiled. I suspect that the 2 noted issues (both kind of picky...) were overlooked in order to get a timely photo of the unit uploaded too RP.

I can understand getting lots of views being the first shot of a unit, but PCA's and favorites I thought usually had some merit, outside of "the paper" and stuff like that

That's my guess, talk about a subpar PCA.

I really like Marc's photos, but that watermark is enormous.

There's a rejection, I believe it's "copyright too large: the watermark of the picture should not be visible from the thumbnail"

I've gotten that rejection at least twice before, and this watermark is at least twice the size of mine that got rejected...and 100% opacity. You can actually read the watermark from the thumbnail.

But of course, all of that can be set aside...and make the photo POTW.

I loathe watermarks almost as much as uncorrected wide-angle distortion.

I see the Vermont Railway is now running a stretch SD70M-2 on its system.

That's why the FEC got rid of them, they were too long...

Does this 20-year-old shot get some leeway for it being a 20-year-old shot? It's awful grainy, way more than it should be. That pile of stuff in the middle of the frame is pretty distracting and it looks to be leaning slightly CCW.

I like most of Tom's photos, especially 40 year old Milwaukee Road stuff, but i'm not sure a pic from the late 90's with those kind of flaws should afford the same leeway...

Growing up near Bensenville, IL on the Milwaukee and working short term at Bensenville I love Tom's posts and the detail he adds that only a crew member would know. What I noticed on this photo was the gaggle of railfans on the small pile of ballast , just so foamer, I had to chuckle. Been there, if not not that exact spot.

You're just not able to comprehend the amount of awesome he produces. Don't feel bad though, most of us aren't.

This seems rather grainy as well for a 2017 photo, is this just due to over sharpening?

Not something I would notice on my own but looking at shadows?
Late filtered light and sun, the bottom half would have been pretty dark. Pulling up the shadows and adding some vibrance can add some noise. I often get the image is too dark rejection and find it hard to brighten up an image past what I would like but when I do, need to up the noise reduction to the RAW image.
