Default Center for Railroad Photography and Art Conference: April 17-19, 2009; Chicago, IL

Is anyone else planning on going to the 2009 CRPA Conference? It comes highly recommended, and I suspect there will be a few RP.net contributors there.

Never heard of it, but now that you mentioned it, it definitely sounds like a plan.

Since it's almost walking distance from home, I guess I should probably go. I've never been to one of these shows before.

There's a lot of railroading in the area. Rondout, EJ&E, CP, UP, CN, and METRA.

From the convention center, what would be the best couple of places and do you have pics?

Chris Z or anyone else, some local info please. I arrive at O'Hare at 3pm. I figured I would take the El into downtown and then take something up to Lake Forest; don't have to be there until 7pm. What line do I want to take, where is the station, etc?

Excuse my ignorance, but is all Chicago commuter rail done by METRA?

thanks, J

Hmm, did my own work, there is Metra Milwaukee District, irregular departures out of Chicago Union Station (several trains terminate at Deerfield, the station before Lake Forest. I take it I can go there and taxi over to the conference?).

And there is the Metra Union Pacific North, equally irregular, on average about the same frequency it seems, going to another Lake Forest station, closer to the conference. Out of Chicago Ogilvie - where is that? Which of Ogilvie or Union Station is more easily accessed from the El? Hmm, they seem to be next to each other, just to the west of the river. It's been a LONG time since I've done Chicago trains.

Maybe I will have time to get the 333 Wacker Drive shot (big green curvy skyscraper across the river from the tracks heading out of Union Station to the north) or perhaps that is too ambitious.

With the little amount of time allowed for railfanning, AB2 and I are planning on hunting down the last two Metra F40Cs operating. They have been stored for a few years, but because of a power crunch, are back up and running. They are usually used on the Milwaukee District lines, the North line to Fox Lake (which runs right through Lake Forest) and the West line to Elgin. Another option is to shoot CN freights on the Waukesha Sub south of Leithton, since they will be routed onto the EJ&E after it is upgraded.

Janusz,

Ogilvie Transportation Center is the new name for the old Northwestern Station. It is two blocks north of Union Station in downtown Chicago. There will be signs, and the elevated trainshed area is hard to miss. You will want to take the Union Pacific - North line to Lake Forest, as it's closest to the college. If I recall correctly, the Metra station is about 2000 feet from the conference venue, so you may not need a cab. Just follow Deerpath Road two blocks east from where it crosses the tracks at the station until you get to Sheridan Road, and then follow that south for a block to the college. There will be signs.

Depending on your scheduling, there are ample good shots in the area around both downtown train station. Your best bet would be the northern approaches to Union and Ogilvie. This area is becoming more and more cluttered with new high-rise developments, so get your shots now. Already some of the classic angles are gone.

Those of you on the fence about attending the conference should go. You will learn more about railroad photography in a day at the conference than you will anywhere else. Highly recommended.

Thanks, John. Looks like the Blue line from O'Hare for me, connecting downtown with the Loop and getting off somewhere to walk west across the river and see some trains!

I work late Friday night, so I won't be getting to bed until 2am or so. I plan on TRYING to get up by 6am, and then leaving Grand Rapids by 6:30. That would put me there around 9am (if I'm lucky). I already sent in my check for Saturday registration, so I'll definitely be there as long as my car doesn't break down. Knock on wood!

So there will be one bleary-eyed grouch in the back row, whining that the slide presentations are not level?

Nah, I'll be good. I only average about 4-5 hours of sleep every night anyway, so 4 hours Friday night won't be unordinary for me. Now, the hangover might be a different story...

Janus,

assuming the meeting hasn't moved, it's here:

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en...a409d9303df53b

It's an easy walk from the UP North (ex-C&NW) line if it's not raining. The Milwaukee about 2-3 miles away, nowhere near the village of Lake Forest itself.

Cool, thanks. Only issue then is that Sunday is to be cold and wet - perhaps I will spend my afternoon in a sports bar at the airport watching Pens/Flyers instead of trackside.

It will be nice to ride a train again. While I ride the subway daily, it isn't the same. Once a year or so my son and I ride MARC for a short ride, 20 min or so.

We're just finishing up a move (Hudson, WI to Eagan, MN - still in the Twin Cities area), and some significant staff changes at work (went from 5 people to 3 back up to 4), so I haven't had a lot of free time lately.

In any event, yes, I'll be there - looking forward to meeting some of you guys face to face.

Closest from the convention center, is Rondout tower. Easy to get to and has some good photo opportunities, at street level and from high up on the bike path where the old Chicago, North Shore and Milwaukee used to run on. Possibility of catching one of the F40C's there.

Leighton junction is a little further away from there. Just travel along Rt. 176 west to Butterfield Rd. and south to the junction.

Waukegan has a bit to offer also. EJ&E has a loco servicing facility there and there is a paralleling road along the tracks that was clear last time I was there.

Union Railway museum is also west along Rt. 176 if someone can find more time to do that.

There's a lot more if you want to spend some time driving around.
