I was hoping that the subject and circumstances would trump the fact that it's an eastbound train near sunset, but no such luck. However, I thought it was worth a try.

I think it is a pretty good picture, and while the nose is a bit dark I don't think that really detracts from the image. I'm guessing it suffers from not quite being a properly lit wedgie and not quite being interesting enough to be a "creative" shot that can violate the rules. So apparently the screener threw it into the wedgie category and gave you the dark nose rejection. It's a lot better shot than any number that have gotten accepted, but I really don't think it is interesting enough to fight for.

I love taking shot like this in the forest. But on RP the whole light on the nose comes into play. Wish theyd be more open to scenic shots like these where its tough to get lighting right.

This is one of those situations where location would have made all the difference. As it stands now, you have a picture of an oil train in the woods with less than ideal lighting.

I do think you'd find that screeners on this site are more open to shots like this if you can really convey the sense of "newsworthiness". There are other things working against you besides the non-descript location.

• Immediately coming to mind is the pretty well established fact that oil trains are big business right now. So there is no shortage of them running all over the country, not really a news tidbit there.
  
• Seeing foreign power on the C&O while unusual isn't completely unheard of. It might happen on less than 5% of the trains across that line, but that does not constitute "rare".
  
• Warbonnets are still plentiful, granted we're long past the days of superfleet C40-8W's and F45's in the red & silver scheme on every single train, but with the boom in oil traffic, BNSF is rolling those old warhorses back out en masse.

So what you really have here is a fine picture, but there isn't enough upside to it for a screener to say, "Yeah, the technical stuff is outweighted by the newsy part, it gets a pass."

If you had found a spot (as rare as they are now) that really screams, "Hey this is on the old C&O!!!" it would have been better, but what you really needed was a matched set of warbonnets in a spot that screams, "Hey this is on the old C&O in Virginia!!!!" Then and only then, would you have had a 50-50 chance of getting this shot accepted with the less than ideal lighting.

Just my point of view.

It's a fine photo. Look at the contrasts between the red locomotives against the earth tones that surround it. Look at the geometric form of the cars against the chaos of lines that surround them. Nothing wrong with the lighting at all.

I don't disagree with your analysis BobE, but for RP.net's "standards"... you and I both know this lighting doesn't get accepted very often.

I really don't understand that particular rejection. Clutter is one thing if it's a bunch of trash cans, some rusted out cars and telephone poles, but when it's all part of a station, why would anyone can that?

If it's a signal cabinet or something like that, okay, maybe I can come on board with that... but oh wells.

Don't much care for Troy's shot, agree with the clutter rejection, but regardless ...

Troy, what are you doing with your selection tool? Second shot recently in which you have mucked up the trees?

Also, not a fan of what I will call early blue hour with the bright ultrasaturated blue sky. Especially when the station looks overexposed.

In the reject, the trees and the blue sky have a funky relationship going on. There appears to be a thin gray border around the outline of the tree. What is causing that?

What do you mean by the trees are mucked up?

I think Janusz is referring to the wind smear that is evident in most of the trees.

As for the gray "border" that Jim sees, I don't see it. But I my eyes aren't as keen as his on such things.

I don't see it on the night shot, but I can plainly see it on the PA reject. Looks like "selection tool edging" for lack of a better term...

That unit looks like a cartoon character to me. Just an ugly and distorted nose. Almost a caricature of a beautiful E or F unit nose.

Sorry, was away from RP forums a bit. The other Troy shot I was thinking of was discussed in the forums recently, it is not the night shot here, it was a shot with a train up on a bridge and a road underneath the bridge and some sort of highway sign lower right. The rejection issue was comp/balance or some such, but several people noticed the crazy selection and what it did to tree branches and such in the background against the sky.
