Default GSMR 1702 Plans Moving Forward

My favorite steam locomotive and non-coincidentally my user-namesake, the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad #1702 is in the works of being restored. A new turntable has been delivered to Bryson City and construction will begin in the coming months.

Groundbreaking has begun on a new engine repair shop in Dillsboro. Apparently, the locomotive could be fully restored in 12 - 18 months after it is transferred to the new shop.

This is exciting to me as this was the first steam locomotive I ever saw in action.

Here is a link to the article, direct from the railroad's website:

Believe it when I see it. They ever going to start running to Dillsboro again? That towns been dead since they left. Not that it was very vibrant in the last 50 years.

They still run TO Dillsboro. They just shut down the depot there so everything runs OUT OF Bryson City.

If I recall, the folks in Dillsboro hated all of the parking that the train riders took up in their oh-so vibrant city. So the railroad used that as a reason to base all operations out of Bryson City. I'm guessing a fair number of folks don't bother going to Dillsboro at all now since they don't get on and off the trains there now.

Default great smoky mounntains railroad

I was in Dillsboro in May 2012 and the place looked like a ghost town. Hope those civic minded folks are happy with all those empty buildings.

No they dont, and they have not for a few years. The train stops West of town, and they run around the train in their little yard West of town and go back to Bryson...

Unless things have changed since I was there in October.

Straight from the website:

"This general excursion trip includes an hour-and-a-half layover in the historic town of Dillsboro, where you’ll find more than fifty shops, restaurants, bed and breakfasts and country Inns. There is time to shop, snack, and visit the many unique shops before returning to Bryson City."

I mean, I don't 100% know. I haven't even been down there for 4 years or more.
