What made her lift the hood, I'm wondering? What was she looking for under there? A place to re-attach it?

The hood is up to signify to other women that the car is in fact broke down otherwise there would be a line of women behind her.  
Also if you could pan to the right you probably would see the curb she ran over.

Now that made me laugh. The hood is up otherwise a line of women would form behind her.
