Thank you very much for the vote (257032) From what I've read in your posts, I'm humbled to get it.

And then this springtime shot that has a nice composition. I've seen shots of this bridge before, but none from this angle.

This thread has been fun to watch, as I am always interested to see how my picks are so different than other people's picks. It's easy to pick broad landscapes, but I always factor in degree of difficulty and uniqueness into my picks.

Here are my nominees that will be announced on the 9th.

Image © Joe Hance
PhotoID: 257928
Photograph © Joe Hance

Joe got my vote because his coverage of the local running through upstate NY really sends the message that winter is almost here. Looking at this shot in particular gives me chills, but it also reminds me to start digging out the heavy layers for my own winter trips.

I was very glad when this shot received a Screener's Choice, because we don't see enough foreign material on the frontpage. I love the way the apartments cling to the hillsidde and the boats and reflection put this shot over the top.

PhotoID: 258139

Decent nighttime streak shot are hard to do, but Brad nailed it here. The VIA LRC cars provide some of the last perfectly matched train sets in North America, and with a bit of available light, the gray, blue and yellow stripe really pop.

PhotoID: 258350

My last spot changed numerous times during the week and was going to be Brian Stephenson's bridge shot that Mitch brought up, but when Kelly Lynch posted this in-cab shot, my jealousy of him grew even more. It's been added to my list of shots to try next time I can get a cab ride.

Wow...I'd never even noticed this shot before! It must have been posted while I was on vacation and buried underneath subsequent SCs.

What do you like about the shot? I am curious because I don't see anything in it. Only my opinion and no disrespect as always.

You might ask Cblaz that not me. I didn't notice it until about 40 minutes ago. It's a nice shot, but not shaking up my nominations at all.

Travis,

No disrespect at all.

I love reflection shots because of all the variables involved (how big will the train be, how much sky/water to include, will I get calm water), and H.H nailed all three with his shot. He included the apartments on the hillside, with many different styles and designs. He got a decent reflection, even with the rippling water as well as boats sitting by the shore. Lastly, he also included some of the shoreline in the foreground, adding some depth of field to the shot.

I'll be honest, however, that if this was taken in America, it probably wouldn't get a favorite from me. This is a very American coverage-heavy web site (with good reason) but we can't forget that there are plenty of overseas photographers that post here that deserve some credit too. If you look at H.H's other shots, this shot is a big departure from his other stuff, mostly wedgies at stations, etc. The train (which isn't all that interesting to me, and I wouldn't know it was historic unless he mentioned it) is not the focus in the shot, it is part of the shot, a criteria that most SC and PC winners adhere to.

Just having this photo nominated as an SC seemed to mean a lot to the photographer. Imagine how he would feel to see it on the front page for a full week. No offense to you, but I feel that would probably mean more to him than having one of my photos or your photos (or another Mitch pan) win an SC.

Mitch,

Thanks for pointing out the Georg Trüb shot. Don't know how I missed such a stunning photo! See, these discussions do have a benefit!

Thanks Chris, was a nice suprise to see this shot be as well received as it was, too bad the snow left as quick as it arrived.

Happy to be of service.

It belonged on the front page when it was first posted, IMHO.

I'm tyring to imagine the screener's thougths as it was screened...
CSX in Cumberland, KS Belle, CP in IL but blurry, Yard Shot of NS, the Swiss Alps with a train in the snow on a ridiculously steep elevation taken from above on a sunny day with rich colors showing the snow capped Matterhorn, BNSF on the Transcon, NS in VA. OK, another batch of photos, done.

Well, so far all my PCA votes for that week are from Europe! Maybe the screener that day didn't like traction shots! At least it wasn't rejected for unlevel!

Great Swiss scenery and bonus points for getting the Matterhorn in the background.

Thanks for posting this, Mitch. What pisses me off (and I have mentioned this before) is that the PCA feature doesn't work on linked photos. WHY NOT?!

Tons of great photos last week. Made me realize how poor I've been shooting lately. For last week's photos:

Very creative effort by Ryan, I'm surprised by just how much light got spread around this scene.

Image © Nscalemike
PhotoID: 258664

This one will gall me forever. I take a big trip and get a bunch of lousy shots, Nscalemike stays home and bags this winner.

A great B&W shot by RF. I'm usually not a fan of B&W, but it was clearly the way to go on this one.

A late addition to my list, bumping another shot that thankfully I did not tell the photographer I was giving him a PC vote. This shot has outstanding mood and atmosphere.

Been a slow week on this thread, so here's my nominees for the award to be announced this Monday, the 17th.

Image ©
PhotoID:

Love this shot by Ryan. Seen plenty from this spot during the day and he makes it even more impressive at night.

Image © Nick Wilson
PhotoID: 258709
Photograph © Nick Wilson

It's hard to believe the size of the sun in Nick's shot. There's so many elements to look at in this shot, with the glowing rails, the truss bridge, the signal bridge. Probably the only way to make it better would be to have a headlight in the distance.

Image © Appalachian Railfan
PhotoID: 258999
Photograph © Appalachian Railfan

With no many trains and not a lot of access, it tough to get new stuff on the Clinchfield. Appalachian Railfan has a bunch of great shots from the Clinch, but this may be his best shot yet. Fall colors and a perfectly still reflection.

Image © Gerald Oliveto
PhotoID: 258986
Photograph © Gerald Oliveto

This may not be the one of the 4 best photos of the week, but it is a personal favorite. Having lived in the area my whole life and shooting this location plenty of times (but never from this side of tracks), seeing Gerald's angle made me realize that I have a lot of opportunities from great shots not far from my house.
