Maybe a lounge topic can be "railfanning weapon of choice" lol...

It's an odd time to be talking about how great Florida gun laws are.

Those of you interested in personal protection are missing the obvious choice to deal with all those silly regulations. Buy curios instead of firearms. A classic Colt Peacemaker or 1873 Winchester (as long as you're dealing with the real McCoy) isn't a weapon as far as the government is concerned. Heck, you can even get yourself an 1870s Gatling gun if you want. As long as it was made before 1898, it isn't a firearm.

The truth will come out in that case.

If the media's version of the story is right, he should go to jail.

BUT...

Word is, the story the media is floating is complete bullshit, and the guy actually was attacked by the kid. And it was legal under the law.

Here is my take on the situation: The guy (Zimmerman) did a dumb thing. He put himself in a bad place. He was following the kid (Martin), which he should not have been doing. And even the 911 operator told him not to. If he had not put himself in that bad place, the kid would be alive and he would not be potentially facing prosecution.

You NEVER put yourself in a position like that. Guns are for defensive purposes, but you have to be smart about it, you dont put yourself in bad spots like Zimmerman did. For this, I blame Zimmerman 10000%, he should have never been in the situation to do this. He's not a cop and he should have let them do their jobs.

I am going to hold judgment until the facts are in...

Perhaps according to the ATF and Fed. regulations, but in California a gun is a gun.

The age of the weapon is immaterial.

Heck (as in Tom Heck) we can't even have unloaded, and/or practice hand
grenades anymore.

And all these offences are felonies rather than misdemeanors.

It is just ridiculous.

Well, yes and no, depending on state laws. Curios are defined federally as any firearm older than 50 years. You have to have a Type 3 FFL license (different from a Class 3 FFL license) to be able to receive curios across state lines, but it's easy to get. Another thing, curios (at least in my state) are not exempt from all laws regulating firearms. You cant carry them without a CCP. Your mileage may vary.

Also, real first generation Colt 1873 Single Action Army's are really, really expensive and not something I would want to use as a personal defense weapon (because it's so valuable, not because it wouldnt work)

Perhaps you should wait until the case winds its way through court.

As it stands right now, all the facts are based on conjecture and hearsay.

Ergo, speculating on what is, or what isn't is a waste of time at this juncture.

The latest reports here is the kid was punching the hell out of the guy (zimmerman). Under Florida law, if you are attacked in a place where you are legally allowed to be, you have no duty to retreat. If the kid just came up to him and started beating Zimmerman's ass, he was perfectly within his rights to shoot Treyvon Martin.

They keep reporting that "the kid is only 160 pounds", but he is 6'0", an athlete, and the Zimmerman guy is reportedly a short, fat dude.

I am going to post this picture, which I will admit, comes from a pro-gun biased viewpoint, but it does show some truth.

Again, I am going to hold off judgment until all the facts are in. I would suggest you do so as well.

The media is absolutely making a complete circus out of this, and that's unfortunate. They initially reported, incorrectly, that this was a white vs black thing, and that turned out to not be the case (Zimmerman is hispanic), they have been wrong pretty much every step of the way.

But back to my previous statement, the guy put himself in a bad spot, he should have absolutely never been there.

Right. And a scantily clad woman who gets raped put herself in a bad spot and shouldn't have worn those clothes.

Stupid comment Joe! SO because of one incident and going off what the media is saying, we are suppose to stop talking about laws?

Besides this thread has jumped to a different amendment, time to.....what ever you do with those jumping thread things

Of what? People with cameras taking photos of say the skyline, a train, bus? There's a fine line between what they NEED to be leery about and what they shouldn't.

9/11 created a shadow on this nation, which is now scared of that shadow.

Coloradorailfan, after reading about your experience in Reply #12, and that of Chris Z in Post #5, where both of you were not on railroad property, and also on a public street taking photos, I felt a bit uncomfortable when I went to take some photos of a freight train at a warehouse, in Loris, South Carolina several weeks ago.

I had to walk about 1/2 mile or so thru downtown Loris, and on my way to the warehouse and back, a County police car was parked with officers observing the area, and a Sherriff's car and a City police car both drove by me on the highway, but no one detained me or asked me any questions.

I told a friend of mine who is a retired railroad worker about the experieneces of Coloradorailfan & Chris, being told they were not allowed to take photos of trains from public property, and off of the railroad right of way, quite incredible.
