Last Friday evening I tried my first night shoot (I've shot a few individual shots by happenstance, but I've never gone out with the intention to shoot at night).

Results, awful!

I have a lot to learn on shooing with available light at night.

My one night shot of decent quality, from some time ago:

Some critiquing,
The 1st is over exposed, it looks unnatural, and for a black and white shot, there isn't a good balance, there is too much white! Also, many of the bright spots are blown out.
The 2nd one does suffer from some lens flare. Sometimes you can get a cool effect with this, but on this shot it looks like there was a fingerprint or smudge on that part of the lens, causing a rainbow-like effect. The nearby Sodium-Vapor street light also has some flare which detracts from the overall quality as well.

Probably because we were on a caboose at midnight with no lights on board. (No air either.)

I hate I missed you, but I'm glad I met Syd Vaught, The Fireman and Chris Starnes, among others.

Next time I will know to bring a daggum remote release. I've had two for this camera and lost both of them.

I agree with both rejections. Keep in mind that daylight photography fundamentals still apply to night shots. For example, the second shot, would you submit a daytime image with such obvious distractions as the lens flare, glare on the cab & slanting poles / tracks? Good luck...

Yeah, there's some flare and ulgy poles and lights in the second one. On the other hand, I'm not telling the OP how to frame his shots, but man, those are a couple crowded shots. Way too "in your face". Hurts me just to look at them. I know that the engine is the point of focus, but the only way I can view these comfortably is if I stand 10 feet away from my monitor. And this isn't the only time I've seen this type of framing here, either. Why do people feel the need to fill the entire frame with the subject? It reminds me of bad pornography.
