Seeking advice on rejected photos

Chuck, both are a bit too centered, as the loco is too centered in the frame, especially the 1st one. The 2nd one isn't too too bad. The 1st one, the composition is a bit off, I would have gone down the track a bit more or stood closer to get more of the train. I don't like how the dead tree juts out on the right either. The 2nd one, just crop in a bit to get the train on the left a wee bit more. But, it's backlit.

The second shot is the better of the two... crop a bit off of the left and a hair off of the top and bottom, and you'll be in business.

Chuck, just in case, as many find it confusing, let me explain "backlit". This refers to light that doesn't fall on the visible part of the train. In this case backlit really means sidelit - the light is coming from the left so the visible side of the train is in shadow - even though the nose is well-lit. (Often a nose in shadow is what is meant by backlit.) On a standard wedgie type shot RP does not care for the side of the train being in shadow.

I agree with Nick (at least what he says implicitly) that the degree of side in shadow is small and the shot is likely to be acceptable.

In the future it is preferable that you provide a link to the rejection rather than attaching the rejected photo to your post - we all get to see the reason(s) for rejection.

I do like to avoid it if at all possible. If I'm going to shoot a wedgie, I try to make sure the lighting is top notch and try to make sure I have both nose and side light.

Thanks guys! For those of you curious I will tell you that photo 1 was rejected for backlight and poor composition and photo 2 was for bad composition!

Okay, I've given up on photo 1 and I'm going to see if I can try again in better light and when I can readjust so the tree isn't present. As for photo 2 tell me what you think heres the modifyed version. Please also keep in mind that this was originall rejected for being overexposed, so keep an eye out for that too!

Cropping looks good. Overexposed? Don't see it. If anything, it needs SOME contrast, just a smidget.

Any luck? I looked through the accepted images today and don't recall seeing it. I agree with Ben in that it needs just a bit of contrast, and the image does look a little overexposed to me, although this laptop makes everything look overexposed.

Come on, Ben, that's not a standard wedgie shot, or even any kind of wedgie shot for that matter. It's a head on shot that just happens to have part of the train in the background due to a curve.

Well, colors were not a problem, and nor was composition, now they're back to home base with backlight which I don't think I can do much about! Anyway, I'm sure to have rejects in the future so keep an eye on this forum!

I did something with the colors but the digital noise is not something I see here as a problem-just a screener having a bad day! Here is the new version.

Am I the only person who liked the first shot?

If you crop to put the loco at the "rule of thirds" position you lose the interesting red building in the background. The piles of ties add interest to the foreground. This would be hard to fit to the rule of thirds, yet to me it is still an interesting photo. Sometime you have to break the rules!

If you can shoot it again, let the loco get a bit closer to the left of the frame, covering up a bit more of the white building and also include a bit more on the right side, so you let the trees cut off the end of the train, instead of the frame doing it. For me, the backlighting works here. There's plenty of light on the nose and the shadows don't take anything away.

Photo 2 can easily be cropped to meet the "rule of thirds" but it's not as interesting a picture as photo 1.

Same problem i always have. Whenever i try to incorporate background structures i always get a cropping rejection just because the train is centered.

I kind of like the compostition as well. It becomes a question (as far as RP is concerned, anyway) as to whether or not the screeners are allowed to like it, as far as the rules they have to use to judge it for inclusion. The lighting could perhaps be a bit better, but I'd vote for breaking the rulse a bit too . . .

As for those that commented on photo one that liked it thakns for your encouragement and constructive critisism. Unfortunalely I gave up on photo 2 as well after several rejections... hear from me soon!
