Here's my Ten:
PhotoID: 341899 Photograph © Loyd Lowry
I wanted this one for quite a while, and it was well worth the effort to me to get it.
PhotoID: 333732 Photograph © Loyd Lowry
The only shot I wanted from Richmond
PhotoID: 331664 Photograph © Loyd Lowry
Another one that took great effort, and planning
PhotoID: 311125 Photograph © Loyd Lowry
One of the C&O's favorite photo spots
PhotoID: 320045 Photograph © Loyd Lowry
A dirty Appalachian shot
PhotoID: 323644 Photograph © Loyd Lowry
I do love me some grinder
PhotoID: 338570 Photograph © Loyd Lowry
It took awhile to find this spot
PhotoID: 342606 Photograph © Loyd Lowry
Hilldale is a spot that's only a mile from the house, so I spend alot of time there.
PhotoID: 342803 Photograph © Loyd Lowry
Another C&O specialty, middle track sidings.
PhotoID: 328706 Photograph © Loyd Lowry
Mother Nature helped me on this shot.

My top. This was pretty hard. No particular order.
The Port of Duluth is a major terminal for ships with heavy shipments. I happened to be down when the heaviest load ever handled by the Soo Line (CP) out of the Port was being offloaded. I had to shoot through a fence for this, but I love the way it turned out. There is alot going on, with the ex Missabe caboose, both Port of Duluth cranes, and the icing on the cake, the ship being called "Big Lift"
PhotoID: 344213 Photograph © Max Medlin
In this shot, everyone else went for the standard shot, but I actually liked this one better. I felt it showed Northern MN very well. Fall leaves were still holding on, with the forest disappearing along the horizon. The game changer for me was the long, hilly, winding road so very typical of this area.
PhotoID: 341370 Photograph © Max Medlin
This one is an absolute favorite of mine. I am not a fan of posed shots, and this is not posed. I loved the little details and the fact that you can see the steam gauge pegged right around 200.
PhotoID: 340948 Photograph © Max Medlin
This one means a lot to me because our Signal Department does a ton, and nothing is more critical to our plans than installing semaphores. This picture of our Superintendent holding up the first semaphore blade to be attached to the motor/pole signifies that we are well on our way to reaching our lofty goals.
PhotoID: 337944 Photograph © Max Medlin
I just like this one.
PhotoID: 330461 Photograph © Max Medlin
This was my first ever attempt at this type of shot, and I loved the way the light just disappeared into the darkness across the bridge.
PhotoID: 328289 Photograph © Max Medlin
Thanks to John Ryan and his huge collection of lenses, I was able to capture what feel is pretty typical of my hometown and the Twin Ports. You have major grain elevators with little switchers, and of course the geese!
PhotoID: 342235 Photograph © Max Medlin
As much as people wanna call this a gimmick shot, it was not posed, and I really liked the fact that I caught the conductor waving back through the window:
PhotoID: 319908 Photograph © Max Medlin
This shot means alot to me. I am young enough where I missed out on the glory days of my favorite railroad, the DMIR. The spot I was at here is no longer available. I spent a nice afternoon just sitting among the flowers and watching as the #215 slowly dumped this train of new cars. This is the last maroon SD38-2 left after CN took over, and I feel lucky to have caught her in her natural element; the Two Harbors Switcher.
PhotoID: 318022 Photograph © Max Medlin
My final choice was a tossup, so Im just gonna post both.
I loved the elements in this shot. The red and white engines of the SOO Line still patrolling the Ports as they have done for decades. The conductor is an old Soo Liner still pounding the iron, albeit for a new owner. The Depot, once a haven of crack Soo Line passenger trains, still has its stunning $oo Line sign, and a Superior sign to top it off.
PhotoID: 336887 Photograph © Max Medlin
Finally, this year we added "North Pole" to our Polar Express display. The elements in this photo really make it. The oldest operating RDC in the US gets decorated with lights every year, and notice the North Pole sign, lighted bags guiding the way, along with one of 7 working Griswolds (remember the signal department?) on the property.

I personally have had a problem with those trying to tell us to turn railroad photography into an "art form." It's fine for them to do so, I welcome it in fact, but what I do have a problem with is that the practitioners of the more "arty" shots, I have found, tend to look down their nose's at others who are shooting more "mundane" shots.
Railroad photography is what you make of it, but one way is not "better" than another, IMHO. Unless you have a pole right thought the nose of the engine! -SG

Glad this thread wasn't started at the beginning of the month, like last year's. For a fun look back: Here's 2009, 2008, 2007, and 2005 (no 2006 thread).

Will we do it over again in January?
I only have 9 shots from 2010 on RP, sadly. I could just put them all here and as it is I will show a ridiculous proportion anyway (3 of 9).
A nice scene, also perhaps even an original perspective from the location; I don't recall having seen it before (and so now prepare to be inundated by Blaszczyk/Goldman/Madore/whoever better versions):
PhotoID: 342087 Photograph © Janusz Mrozek
A shot of no particular merit that just pleased me because it was a success to me at something I had thought of doing. I think of it as a study, as practice for something better, whatever/whenever that may be:
PhotoID: 342092 Photograph © Janusz Mrozek
An oddball detail shot, the kind I don't do often enough but I always enjoy doing:
PhotoID: 339134 Photograph © Janusz Mrozek
Oh, heck with it, one more, starting to find interesting shots with the ultrawide, and a capture of a favorite sight:

Yeah, I'm like Travis, except he saves up 100 from one trip, I am saving 100 from one decade, just so I can make a big splash and be BMORP.

Shot quite a bit this year, but only added a dozen or so shots to the site here (various reasons why, which I won't bore you with). So out of that limited pool, here's my top 10, essentially in reverse chronological order, and as it were my top favorite of the year is the most recent.

Sure, I'll take part! Seems like I finally got a decent amount of material submitted, but the start of college seemed to eat away at railfan time near the end.

I was all set to participate, but when I did a search, I discovered that I've only uploaded about 25 shots this year. Hmm, I could have sworn that number was higher.

John, I only got 28 in this year, and also, I'm dang sure the worst of yours is better than the best of mine.
Edit: I only see 16 John Ryan 2010 shots, but included in them are 3 PCA1s, 3 PCA2s, 3 POTWs, and 2 SCs.

Great question Peter, as my list is certainly different than the view count.
These two are similar composition in different locations. They reflect the enjoyment of being out in beautiful locations, and just being outside!

A shot in the dark that worked I like the angle of view here as well.

The right place at the right time. 2 hours from home in a different time zone in the early morning.

To get a good result at such a popular place like Morant's Curve gives one a good feeling.

And the last two, because I thrive on being outside watching trains and enjoying the scenery.

2010 was an eventful year! I learned a lot about photographing, enjoyed meeting new people, and familiarized myself with a new SLR and L glass. Lots of accomplishments this year and overall, an eventful year in the railroad industry.

Thank you for the compliment. I found that I had erred in my search method. I did a search for "John Ryan" in 2010, and now that I look back, 13 of the results were not taken by my. Apparently there is also dentist with my name...
