Default New Horns...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHTwSKuB764

What the heck are these new horns? For some reason, I'm highly interested in knowing what they are, despite the fact I think they are disgustingly shrill and high pitched. They seem to be popping up quite frequently on CSX widecabs and narrow cabs lately, as well as some NS Dash 9's. They are overtaking other nice Nathans nowadays.

K5 varient of some sort, likely fouled. Ive heard one like this before, I was rather displeased as it was a ex-Con like that one and i was hoping to hear a RS3L but got that instead.

I railfan CSX almost every saturday morning and I hear quite a few of these on various locomotives, unfortunately many SD40-2s and ex-cons as well!

These horns are absolutely infesting CSX. If I spend a day on CSX, I hear AT LEAST 3 or 4. They are on C40-8W's, AC4400CW's, SD40-2's, GP38-2's, some Road Slugs, even a couple of GEVO's, but worst of all, AC6000CW's. Even some NS Dash 9's are "catching the disease." They might just be worse than K5LLA's...

Maybe they have the Swine Flu. I wouldn't get too close, and definately wash your hands after a day of railfanning

That's a regular K5LA. It's just broken.

Default Horn work

FYI: Nathan has produced a new version of the KL5 that sounds like an older M5 horn, which is much deeper.

I was thinking this is what you may have heard until I saw the video. What you have is not the new deeper M5. More like an off tune horn.

Keep in Mind CSX is in the process of moving all horns off the cab back to the long hood. Almost all of the relocated horns I have viewed look new or rebuilt and freshly painted.

I hear these all the time on the Hudson river line with wide cabs, lately there has been less wide cabs but I don't like these horns they're too generic.

Third Generation K5LA

Overplaying 5 bell, a dull 4A bell, and a bad diaphragm.
They're the wave of the future. Hopefully someone at Nathan gets the K5 horn series "back on track."
Amtrak 98 and NS 2570 now have these. That is bad!

CSXT 7920 has one, many C44-9Ws have them too.

The railroads now have their own equivalent of swine flu they can spread around...
