What's the latest on when the 1702 will be pulling again on the GMSR?

Thanks studogg120.
Joe,
I was told that 1702 is supposed to go into the shop at the end of this year and possibly be back in time for fall 2007. Per the norm with steam, things always get pushed back but there are plans to start work at the end of the year on her. Interestingly enough, there are plans for Southern #722 to start getting restoration work sometime in 2007 as well....stay tuned. 1702 is a neat engine but I am dying to see 722 under steam.......I can just imagine the stack talk of that engine climbing Red Marble Gap again!

Somehow I forgot they were planning to run the 722 again. All those years the 1702 ran up there and I kept putting it off going. When I finally got up there, of course, it was all diesel. And then I had my first taste of real, actual steam this winter on the New Hope & Ivyland. Can't wait to see a steamer again!

Those are some nice shots, Bart.
I'm also looking forward to 1702 running again. She's probably my favorite in terms of sentimental attachment (check my avatar photo). Can't wait to take off down Thomas Valley Road through Whittier or wind through the Nantahala Gorge the first chance I get to chase her again! I miss chasing the 1702 through that beautiful country up there; used to do it a few times a year.

Thank you John, I probably saw you chasing us at one time or another, and that is some beautiful country up there. I miss 1702 as well. I spent 18 months working behind it so I got attached. It will be nice to see steam of any kind return to that railroad, 722 is going to be the beast. As far as historical significance, power, and coal fired action, it will put 1702 into the shadows. Hopefully once both get running they will doublehead, and there will be no need for a "deezul" to climb Red Marble. Tweetsie is keeping the WNC skies scented with coal smoke as usual.......they put on a great show up there, 5% grade and two VERY sharp locomotives that are in fantastic shape. I dont think they get the glory cause they are inside an amusement park but believe me, they run a fantastic railroad there. (Used to fire both of those engines, so Im attached to them as well!)
BTW Joe, I know what you mean about meaning to go see an engine run and putting it off and when you finally get a chance its gone.....did that all through the early 90's when N&W 611 was running thru NC every year........still kicking myself for that! Damn Norfolk!
