Thumbs up Wig Wags?

I would like to know HOW they got their name. Also i would like to know what year they went "out of style" and replaces with the ones we come to all know.
Also is there any in PA thats in "working" order?

Are you talking about ditch lights that alternate back and forth in intensity or the crossing signal? If it's the signal, here's a good description:

I'm sure he's talking about wig-wag crossing signals. To which I don't have the answer regarding Pennsylvania, but to say that I had never seen or heard of them until I moved to California. This doesn't mean that they don't exist in other places, just that I don't know of any.

There are very, very few left.
