Default Feather River Canyon Woes

It is being reported that a large land slide has closed Union Pacific's Feather River Canyon route in northeastern California. The slide, which is composed of mostly small rock and dirt along with large and mid-sized granite boulders, closed the railroad between tunnels 20 and 21. This is just west of Beldon at MP 258.25 or so, the slide is covering about 250 feet of track. It is expected that the canyon route will be closed for two or three days.

East and westbound traffic will be detoured to Donner, two manned helpers will be used on the mountain to assist trains over the "Hill." It is also reported that two work trains have been dispatched to the Feather River slide, one from Sparks, NV.
