Default Hi Sun Award

I think this might an award winner for terrible hi-sun. I went to Fayetteville NC in July and took this picture at 12:30 in the afternoon.

I was soo dumb too, for some reason, I sat around Saturday afternoon and waited until sunday mid-day to go watch trains. Total brain disconnect there

Don't forget that there are other reasons to go somewhere mid-day to watch trains, such as, ..., to see trains!

Yea, it could be worse, but look at those shadows under the numberboards and under the pilot, that's gonna kill it every time, especially a wedgie like this.

Love the ACL cantilever tho. We got a couple here near Lakeland / Winston of the same design...

Greg,

Sorry my friend. That shot won't win any high sun awards. It gets a WHOLE lot worse than that.

And it's pictures like that which have led to people melting down and hating RP when getting rejected.

Heck... If I was there, I would have taken it... but I probably wouldn't have been there that time of day unless I was on a non-railfanning trip and I knew that was the one window of time I had to pursue the hobby.

Summer railfanning can really suck for folks like me, who really like sleeping in. Nothing like waking up, even at nine, and realizing that even if you got out, and drove somewhere, you'd have like 30 minutes of "doesn't suck too bad yet" light left.

Yep, nothing I can melt down there for except my own dumb self lol

As for summer rail fanning, it's not to bad. If you miss the AM window, there is the PM window. I can sleep until like 1 or 2 pm, drive an hour and make it to the site around 3, just when the light is getting good.

I can't sleep in...I swear I was a rooster in another life or something. Plus, I love being out early in the morning in the summer. Just nothing like being out in nature when the sun is rising and the birds and chirping...and a you can hear a horn off in the distance.

Man... I wish I was like that. I really do enjoy being out in the very early AM... but when it's 0500, I suddenly feel differently.

I will say that getting up to work at 7 am, and getting up to go watch trains at 7 am are two completely different worlds...

Agreed. Getting up at 7am to photograph trains is definitely much more enjoyable.

There's nothing like being out in nature at 7am on a warm summer morning. You can have your bed, lazy ass.

On the contrary. I loved being up early in the summer when I was a kid, and 40 years later I still feel the same. Seriously, I don't sleep much...maybe 6 hours a night if I'm lucky. And the older I get, the less I sleep. Besides, I'll have plenty of time to sleep when I'm dead.

Summer mornings and late summer afternoons are the best. Just so peaceful.

I personally have had a problem with those trying to tell us to turn railroad photography into an "art form." It's fine for them to do so, I welcome it in fact, but what I do have a problem with is that the practitioners of the more "arty" shots, I have found, tend to look down their nose's at others who are shooting more "mundane" shots.
Railroad photography is what you make of it, but one way is not "better" than another, IMHO. Unless you have a pole right thought the nose of the engine! -SG

Yeah I suppose so. I am not as big into the actual trains as I am into the photography. I can tell the difference between train types, but the locomotive stuff is beyond me.

On the other hand, there's nothing more exciting than shooting some pictures and seeing it in the database

Agreed. I used to be an early riser, that stopped in NOV 1984 when I was rudely awakened at 0530 after being kept up for 36 hours and finally allowed to sleep at 2200 the previous night. Ever since then, I am NOT a fan of any time before 0900. I can get up early and function but I hate all living things until 0900 or so.

Early morning in summer time is pretty cool. You don't need your AC until about 9am or so.

I usually wake up and just roll out of bed and go. Just keep my pj's on and all lol.

Now what's a real bitch, waking up at 5am, going to the tracks from 5-9, and seeing 1 photograph able train and 7 non photographable ones
