Default New Daily Upload Record

Hi guys,

On Sunday, September 23, we shattered the previous all-time daily upload record of 612 with 671 photos screened!!

To the one or two folks who feel the need to e-mail us on a daily basis and tell us how our "outrageous" and "elitist" standards are chasing "them and all their friends" away from RP.net, it looks like others who understand the game are replacing you and "your friends."

And to those of you who've been part of the site since its inception nearly 5 years ago, and through all the years since, I say thank you for making RailPictures.Net into the phenomenon it is today!

I've actually wondered about stats like this, and the harder to measure stat of how many, if any, people have gotten rejected here and lost interest.

It's really challenging to keep going at times but there is the desire to say "I'm railpictures.net good."

The question is, how many of those 671 photos got on?

I thought it was some sort of record. I was shocked as I saw 240 pictures yesterday. Great job everyone.

And a big "Thank You" to all the screeners for putting the time and effort into making this site what it is today.

I agree, a huge thank you to everyone behind this site. It's really terrific.

Looks like the record might be broken one day later. 15 more photos need to be accepted in the next hour and a half for it to happen, or 14 to tie it. How does this all of a sudden randomly happen 2 days in a row?

While we're on the subject, any sort of numbers for the slowest day on RP? (say within the last couple years when the site got going)

Uploaded photos seem to be up, but overall site visitors seem to be on a slight downward trend. http://www.alexa.com/data/details/tr...ilpictures.net

I wouldn't put too much (okay, any) stock at all in Alexa's traffic rankings. Daily viewership has risen every month since the site went online nearly 5 years ago, except one, and that was awhile back.

Unfortunately, Alexa's stats are based only on internet users who have the Alexa toolbar installed. Due to the sheer volumes of people who visit sites like Google, Yahoo, etc., the rankings for those sites are considered pretty accurate, but for smaller (in the grand scheme of things) sites like this, they're practically worthless.

An example is another site I run which gets less than 1/5 the daily viewers of this one: http://www.alexa.com/data/details/tr...irdisaster.com ... its traffic rank is actually higher than that of RailPictures, with much much less traffic.

I never knew it was just for the "toolbar" thing. There ya go. I figured it wouldn't make sense that it was more popular in 04 than it is now.

Actually, we've screened about 100 less so far today, but accepted 7 more. That means the acceptance ratio has been quite a bit better today (41.99% today vs. 35.18% yesterday). Monday is always the slowest day for uploads, so it'll be interesting to see what tomorrow brings.

Regarding the slowest day, we don't really keep stats of that. Once stats are 2+ days old, they're removed from the daily stats and incorporated into weekly, monthly, and yearly stats. I seem to recall that several years ago, major holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving were notoriously slow for uploads (I vaguely recall screening a total of around 70 photos one Christmas), but recently, even those days are fairly busy. I wish holidays would slow down again... more time for eating a bunch of food I have no business eating!

I'm not surprised that the Christmas period is a lot slower, for uploads, due to the obvious reasons. However, some countries, such as the UK (actually, it wouldn't surprise me if they're the -only- ones!), have no trains operating, full-stop, on Christmas Day, and an extremely reduced timetable on Boxing Day - this includes freight, as well as passenger.
