Default Getting Published

How do most railfans/photographers go about getting their railroad photos published in magazines/books? Do they have to submit them to the companys or do the companys find their pictures and ask them? Have any of you guys been published? j/w. Any replies would be great. thanks ,Ryan

I was published in Railpace two years ago twice, but since then I've had a hard time getting shots published.

Usually near the front of a magazine there is a section that shows how you send photos to them.
Canon EOS 7D
Canon 70-200mm f/4 L
Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM
Canon 50mm f/1.8

It's pretty straightforward with magazines, try for news photos, feature photos to accompany an upcoming article, or just write your own article and shoot some photos to accompany it.

I've only had a few photos published in two books, and in both cases I knew the author.

True. I had this one http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/ln/ln40026c.jpg published in a book on the L&N after the author saw it on line. Excuse the extremely crappy 5 year old scan here, they did a much better job scanning it for the book. You really never know where they're looking for material.

I've had a photo published before. Railfan and Railroad contacted me asking if they could use this photo: http://www.railpictures.net/viewreject.php?id=170685 It was published in the February 2005 issue.
