My latest rejections. Just sharing and always enjoy others thoughts. The first I get why it doesn't cut it for RP. The last two I figured would make the grade.

All 3 of them are legit rejections. While I get your concept here, I don't think the screeners like it as much as me.

Are you using film? If so, What camera?

The darkness gives it some feeling.

The first two have a wonderful (sarcastic) instragram look to them. I didn't like them when I saw them on facebook, and I'm still in that boat today.

I can go either way on the last image, as I'm not really keen on the composition, but the grittiness of the image is quite striking.

I'm not a huge fan of the look of digital (which does work well for a lot) which is why I try to create a film look or feel. I like how different films could slightly add or change the mood or feel of an image. The masters would choose the film that had the tone or color shift they wanted for certain images. Add a heavy vignette to finish the instagram look.

All three photos are very, very dark and drab. Obviously, you post processed like that on purpose. I can appreciate you train of thought that train photos have become to 'digital,' but I think yours suffer form the same thing, just the other direction. To each their own. You don't have to look very long at my RP photostream to see I still prefer a more traditional style.

The second shot could be good, I really like interesting framing devices. But all the detail to the top and left of the frame is lost, its simply too dark.

Same goes for the third. Almost the entire pilot of the Amtrak engine blends into the ballast. Absolutely no detail at all. Your post processing style also makes the dead space to the right of the engine even more bland.

I have thought about it but the advancements of digital are greater. Plus, I don't want to build a darkroom

I like 'em all, Travis. And I'd have accepted them all had I been screening.
Points for you being Travis, points for expanding upon the generic and all great compositions.

If a photographer can nuke a shot, add warmth, glint, saturation, brilliance, structure and sharpness - then why can't another go the other way?

If one can go B&W or sepia with color, why not grunge and vignetted?

Food for thought - your thoughts on digital.

I think RP needs to stop looking at individual pics and start accepting portfolios and /or styles from established photographers. Favoritism? Perhaps, but unlike the magazines and the contests - this does not ban what gets in - no, it simply adds. So - it could be discretionary or it could be once a level is reached ie; average views per image or PC's or such.

I think what got me to this point was noticing how much I like certain photos when viewed in a collection as opposed to initially seeing them alone.

Anyway - best of luck. If you're ever in Philly, let me know. I have some vinyl we can listen to through a vacuum tube amp!

See, that is interesting - great photo and location but my eyes just see yellow/green over load and my brain can't get past that.

Further, you don't want to build a color dark room.

Shoot digital and force the look of film processing.

It is cheaper and in the end you will be much more successful.

Remember, the look of film is a more result of what happened due to the technology, the aging of the chemicals on the acetate and the way the developing process rendered the image, rather than anything the photographer did.

Especially the red-shifting of the color in people's slides that they are scanning now.

Color printing is very time consuming and in the end expensive in chemicals and materials.

One interesting caveat - some of the shots you do so well recreating (compositions aside)... well - they are so good they match the results showing many limitations of technology or skill that others might not have had or perhaps a lack of equipment to get the intended results.

For instance, what if Joe Shmoe posted your SP reflection shot.

From you - it's a masterful recreation but for "my kid brother took this shot with an old Kodak 110 camera" - are you going to allow equal access on RP?

Hence - it would need to be noted the intention followed by a blank-ish check or note from RP. Y'know.. maybe a symbol or notation within the data field.

I like #2 as-is, I dont get the PEQ...

The last one is just too dark, the first one is dark and blown out sky. We can all argue about the foreground obstruction, because a lot of them have been being accepted recently, this one because of the leaves gone is actually less obstructing.

I got one rejected recently for cloudy/common and I am not crying because it's technically an accurate rejection, even though I thought it really popped with the colors. Yours does not. I can deal with it.

Would the second one have a chance if you cropped down from all sides? I like the framing, but the "stuff" isn't interesting enough to be 75% of the photo.

Images are very creative, but that doesn't always mean success. I would personally be proud to have taken any one of them. I probably wouldn't have tried to upload any of them (well, maybe the last one).

To rephrase, the third one isn't too dark, it was taken in conditions too dark to suit RP! I think it would be wrong to lighten it for RP if that is how it was or that is the interpretation of the scene.

I don't have a problem with the pilot disappearing - if it is getting dark, that can happen to human eyes also.

I agree that some photos work so much better in a group rather than on their own. It is a cool idea but I couldn't even begin to think about how you would work here and how those without a personal gallery would react. That is for another place. I occasionally do a railroad related blog on my site to showcase a set of images.
