Just like Facebook.

But I do not look at every single thread - only the one's from photographers I know or with headings that might be of interest. Besides, of the 120 or so images accepted on RP daily, how many would you say were GR8 SHOTS?

It's mostly railfan b.s. rather than a substantive discussion of the industry and what's going on. The questions and comments are often too simplistic. There might be some merit in hearing what might be coming along, but that's about it.

Trainorders is far more valuable for Western railfans than Eastern. While most of the photography stinks, you eventually know who to avoid, and who to look at. Although I like looking at some bad photographers just for entertainment value and to see is clueless enough to think that it's an awesome shot no matter what others say.

For information and finding things out west of the Mississippi, I would venture a guess that TO is second to no other site. There are regular postings from all over the west, you can do searches and find info on almost every line imaginable, and if you have a question, there will usually be someone with an answer. I follow TO for the tidbits of useful information that come along, and because there is a healthy contingent of railfans from Kansas who post on there which allows me to keep up with what's going on in my old neighborhood.

That is true of about every railfan internet discussion board I am aware of, including this one. But there are nuggets buried in the mud, and at the risk of saying the obvious the secret is learning were to look, whether it is pictures or comment. With regard to TO, the "railroaders nostalgia" discussion has had some real gems posted by some pretty knowledgeable retired officers. Off the top of my head I could point to a series by Mike Ongerth, and some detailed stories about snow clearing on Donner by a retired division super. A number of retired SP guys post there, so perhaps it is of more interest to me since I am ex-SP. It's especially fun when they name names!

But back to Flickr, where this thread began. I notice that my images appear to be sharper on Flicker than on RP. Anyone know why?

Since the Flickr uploader is producing multiple sizes of your image, I suspect there is some optimizing going on.
I have noticed that some of HG's images there look oversharpened on the page with the sidebar, but look great at full size.

That's because there are a bunch of fascist moderators who delete anything they deem questionable

As far as useful answers, I see a lot of "use the search"

But I agree, it's a great site if you want to know where 4014 is, or how many times it farted today

They banned me years ago when it was still a free site, bunch of fascists

The threads all stay on topic? How boring is that? That's not reality. So it's like a bunch of Rainmen sitting around talking specifics for hours on end?

My image files on Flickr are larger.

That is a problem with Facebook, they truncate image files so it doesn't suck up their bandwidth and the result can be fuzzy edges in the image.

Images on facebook can be just as sharp as anywhere else if you know how to size it properly.

I do enjoy palming the ball and waving it in front of somebody going 'NAH NAH' occasionally.

Since you've lost the humor, I guess I should play nicer now. Facebook photo viewer is optimized for two sizes. 960 pixels exactly on the longest side, or 2048 pixels exactly on the longest side. If you upload to that standard, you do not have to deal with the facebook compression algorithm.

Now give me my ball back.

Yep, that's good to know. Of course, all my shots look like shit either way, so a few pixels this way or that probably won't matter...
