Default Thoughts on a sister site?

Before I propose this, I'll just state this is a thought, not a proposal- I'm not wanting to draw people away from railpictures, nor am I wanting to add to the web design/admin/bandwidth/whatever of the folks that do a sterling job running this site. Also, I've had a couple of cups of grape juice...

I've got a lot of 'almost' railway pics that are artistically good, IMHO, and a pile of 'not at all' rail pics that I think some of you lot would be interested in seeing. In the same way, I think there'll be a lot of you with stuff far better than mine that I'd want to see (that's of no railway significance whatsoever). I for one would like to see a non-railway version of the site, for railpictures members, to post *good* standard shots, be they of landscapes, portraits, still life, etc. There's a pile of talent in this site, and I'd like to see more of it, not just the 4' 8 1.2" worth we get just now.

I know this may cause controversy, but I think we may be missing a lot from the talent available - 'railways' is only one of my hobbies - add motorbikes, guitars, ladies , history, hill walking, PHP , live music, etc, etc and you may get the feeling; I would want to see more from some of the other guys I see taking outstanding rail pics.

There - I've lit a possible touch paper, so I'm off to bed. If anyone wants to flame me, do it here. If you have a notion to agree, or contribute, either post or email me, and we can see where it goes...

Cheers,
Dave

P.S. thanks for the Members Choice this week guys (beaming)

Why don't you get one of those free websites and start your own website? That's what I did 3 years ago, and now have over 350 pages of stuff. Mine isn't free, but there's plenty of them out there and it's not hard to put it together.

Dave.

Railpictures.net contains the best railroad photos on the 'net just as their slogan states. I personally do not wish to contribute my photos to RRPA (Railroad picture archives). This may sound a bit rude, but I just don't want my photos on a site that has hundreds, perhaps even thousands of poor quality, overcast, and blurry photos. I know there are several photogs on RRPA that submit good photos, many of which also submit here on RP, but I think the site contains some pretty rough photos as well.

That's why I use Blogspot.

Only the finest photos can be found on Blogspot

I guess I don't see what the point of a sister site to RP.net would be... do we really need a site devoted to the non-railroad photography of railroad photographers from a particular railroad photography site?

Well, I'll admit, any place you submit images to will not be perfect, but atleast my images don't have to be affiliated with others on Blogger. RP.net is one site that pretty much is guranteed to have good quality photos, which is one reason I like to submit. The only thing RRPA is good for is looking up images of roster shots. You have about 20 pages of images of CSX 4617, most of which lacking so much detail, the roadnumber is barely visible.

Dave;

I'm actually with you. I think it could be cool to have a non-railroad site with pictures from railroad photographers. Most of us have other accounts on other sites, but I like the user interface with RP best. Besides, my most viewed shots on Flickr would barely scrape by on RP.

I personally think it would be cool to have a site where everyone on here could share their other photography. Thanks to college I haven't seen a train in forever but I take photos of other things besides trains. I'm sure everyone else does too. Like Joe said with a user interface like RP.

Some of my other interests just for example.

Automotive, Food, Animals(dogs, cats etc), Wildlife, Landscape's etc.

Just curious, how is www.traingallery.net going to be compared to RP.net?

It depends on who's doing the comparison. Once it's launched, I hope most people will find it better. I wouldn't be dumping time into it if I didn't think it would be.
