"Meanest" appearance?
What locomotive do you think has the "meanest" presence when speeding down the rails? Sometimes I'll catch a Dash-9 or an SDXX in the right light or speed and think to myself, "I wouldn't want to be in the crosshairs of that thing right now!" What locomotive inspires that in you?

Meanest appearance has to go N&W's Class A. It looks mean when speeding down the rails. It's also doubtful anything can compare to staring at an A coming down the tracks at maximum speed.
I'll also have to say that the Southern and N&W SD45's or the Southern GP40X's. Those flared radiators coming at you long hood forward just look awesome. The styling seems to scream "get out of the way!".
A C39-8 running long hood forward also ranks up there.

Gonna have to go with the N&W A Class as well. Those machines didnt hit things and derail....they went thru things and continued on their journey. Not saying the Challenger isnt mean looking, but I am not a fan of western RR's, and the A looks meaner. The N&W Y class was pretty mean looking. The size of the cylinders alone were intimidating, you could park a Geo inside of them. The N&W J Class looked mean as well, and they were. Modern locomotives.....I cant think of anything to compare to staring at an A at track speed heading towards you...see below....Toy looses to Real machine.....

I think I'll pick the F59PHI in Surfliner paint. When its speeding down the tracks at 90 mph, and blowing it's horn, it looks, and sounds pretty mean to me. Heres a pic.

Being an ALCOphile, my vote has to go to the C-636. The look just says "brute power", but yet it's vaguely graceful as well.

When it comes to diesels, I think the SD-70ACe with that notched nose has to be a contender. But, honestly, none of you have really hit on mean. The A and the Challenger are big, strong engines, but nothing looks mean like a C&O engine with those smokebox mounted flying pumps:

Pretty much any EMD spartan cab. The styling with the numberboards above the windows, at low angles it just looks sharp and stylish. And high angles...I guess pretty much all angles.
