Top shot
A blah shot of a SW1500 beating out the iconic 1983 NRHS triple decker shot at Richmond. What has this world come to?

Agreed. Any photographer with an overly inflated ego can overly inflate their view-counts with external links, essentially using the site's features to self-promote. But only RP members can favorite an image.
When you see an image with mega-views and relatively few favorites, it is either an image in which you can't tell what you are seeing from the thumb or more likely and image heavily campaigned by the photographer using off-site links. In the case of the shot which started this thread, the image came from a photographer with a long history of forcing his way to To24 through a linking campaign. Based on the stream of submissions, there were others chasing the same train, some of whom actually got better angles IMHO, but their images didn't get the home page exposure, because the individual I am speaking of made sure of that.

Neither one is near the top-viewed for the week.
Still, 5700 views and 35 faves for the Richmond is not bad at all!

Non-members cannot favorite image so if many views are originating off site faves will be low(are linked views still counted?). 20 favs for 12000 plus views????? I think as 1pc good for lower count and .5 pct for higher count
I find the Russians contributors overall excel in photography. It is hard to believe this photo is not screeners choice but maybe will show up a POTW. Sadly I missed it until showed up as Peoples Choice. This location is actually north of Sweden, December, does the sun even rise, what was the temp's. I'd guess train stopped for shot (composite and some good PS) unless someone else has insight?

Definitely an OCF composite. I really like the shot because it was executed well. A statement I can't say with a lot of OCF shooters on this site.

This shot, posted about three hours ago, will be TO24 at the top of the hour.

How many more drone wedgies from the Canadian border will be campaigned to the top before Admin stops the linking of this guy's images?

That's a trainload of views just from placing links. Where does one find those links?

I don't come on these forums too often, but after seeing this shitty photo I figured I'd have a look to see if anybody else had commented on it. It only took me about a minute. I agree, the linking from this guy has got to stop. The photo is up over 10K views right now. It's backlit, oddly positioned and frankly plain garbage!!

9,000+ views and only 38 favorites (one of them mine)??? Another case of linking offsite?
This is a really nice photo and it amazes me that only 37 members before me favored it.

Currently 2791 views AND 31 Favorites:
 | PhotoID: 735602 Photograph © Coloradorailphotographer |
This photo has not been campaigned (assuming by the current count) and is deserving of more views BUT the favorites speaks volumes. In a fair fight, I cant imagine a blah farm field in the flat lands out viewing these stormy mountainous views.......

Yeah, and it was getting creamed by you-know-who view wise. There are 4 or 5 names on this site who will almost always get a TO24 when they post. Screeners Choice is another thing altogether. The Midwest is rarely chosen, probably because it is not pretty enough (unless there is some weather event going on). Many locations are multiple SC favorites. In fact some of the same train on the same day at the same location by the same photographer have won the SC award twice! I'll buy a round of drinks if I ever win one! LOL!

And then there is this. Actually I not so predisposed to pick on him but here what I see, the whole building scrunching down and tilted???, the grassy knoll well illuminated, the 7010 trucks have a weird look(might be how they are painted but still weird, the red CP gleaming and 4 Favs. As I mentioned I look for .5 to 1 pct of total views for Fav's, this is .001?? think I got that right, but only 4.
I am kinda conventional but I don't think the whole depot was needed, a crop up, we don't need to see all that nice lawn, and reduce the exposure or the lighting to begin with.????????
I have tons of night shots, some just get rejected, others I write off on my own.
Bob
Also not in love with the latest SC, in my opinion not even close to the one I mentioned that did not get one, nice sky, nice light, oh yea and there is a train off in the corner.

Ever notice how virtually everything this photographer posts goes straight to To24, and typically within a few hours?
 | PhotoID: 735737 Photograph © Dave Schauer |
He is quietly one of the most prolific linkers here.... He kicks KB's butt down the road.
Unfortunately, folks like this are basically telling the rest of us: "Excuse me, ya'll need to get out of the way, because I belong at the front."

I never took notice! I checked his photos and sure enough, he has an impressive running of top shots. Of his last 45 posted shots, only 13 of them were under 10k views (of those 13, all but 1 was in the 5k to 9k range) . Granted his shots are different to look at and a lot of those shots are not your typical wedge but 10k plus views on 32 plus shots?? Things that make you go hummmmm..........

He runs a few facebook groups and has a decently large audience on them. Easier then a 3 piece puzzle I guess.

So it seems like some of you folks wish there was a bottom shot of the day along with th top shot. I never understood the problem you folks have with linking shots to Facebook. I always thought the goal was for people to actually SEE your work, but maybe I am wrong.

I'm honestly more in agreement with you here on this. I enjoy taking these photos with the goal of being able to share them with others. I can see both sides on the linking discussion, but personally I don't even know how they do it. I used to post links on my FB page, but the insights showed I'd only get maybe 80-100 link clicks on a given post, so I have no idea how they get these "thousands of linked views."
