Very friendly crews will invite you in (that's what has happened to me).

I never got any shots during my cab rides, but I have a best friend who's an engineer. Next time I get the chance to head to NJ, I'm gonna meet up with him and hopefully get some cab shots on the M&E.

Forgot to tell you guys, not bragging, just telling you a rather cool fact. An engineer gave me a dynamic brake, and a reverser. Have any of you ever gotten anything like that? Thanks

Most engineers asked my if I wanted to come up, the engineers that ask me up to the cab are VERY friendly.

I got some food and water from a BNSF crew on a CN reroute train in Stratford, IL.The conductor already ate his lunch and had rice-crispy bar left and offered it, they also had little plastic cups with purified water with CN labeled tin-foil covering, other than that I just got some photos of passing trains and the cab itself.

I also know some guys that are crews of passing trains in Polo, and since they don't stop they throw their old work-orders to me.

Smile My very exciting day of railfanning

I've gotten a reverser before (on September 5th, my dad's birthday). Me and my family were out railfanning, and we saw a stopped BNSF train. A patched SP SD40T-2 Tunnel Motor was second engine. When I got out of the car to take some photos, the engineer waved us over. My dad and I walked over to the cab and the engineer's words were "Do you want to get a pic inside?". Right there, that made my day. I walked up the stairs of the BNSF Dash 9, opened the door and walked into the cab. It was really nice with the AC on. The engineer let us explore the cab of the SP! We got to blow the horn on both of the engines. The train was waiting for a green signal, which wouldn't come for about another five hours (probably even longer). The Transcon was really backed up that day. There was a derailment about 30 miles from where I was in the engine. Westbounds were backed up all the way to Joliet and eastbounds were backed up all the way to Galesburg. The engineer then gave us the reverser. It was very nice of him. We then went outside and chatted with the conductor for a while. When we were leaving, his final words were "You guys be careful around trains". You couldn't ask for better words from him. It was a very exciting day and a whole lot of fun!

Man I wish that would happen to me. I've gotten to speak crew members, mostly just they hey and how ya doing, and ask me if I like trains. I had one tell me I could get closer to the engine, but not to climb on it. But normally it's just the friendly wave to a stopped train.

Thats my b-day too!
I wish trains stopped around here so that I could get that offer. Thats the downfall of double track. No passing sidings=extremely few trains stopping and few opputunities for night still shots.

I personally have connections within the UP, as I know 3 engineers, 2 working, and one that's been "laid off" for a while. However, the several times I've been in cabs, it's all just been really nice crews that I didn't know. Such as this shot:
