Maybe it was all the flashes going off from the bridge.

It's still a nice shot, just a little over PS'ed on the nose IMO

Aside from being unlevel (as Joe pointed out), I don't think it looks too overdone. High sun shots have their place in this world and I think Ryan did a good job making it look acceptable.

He did a very good photoshop job with it (far moer skill than I have).

Not my personal cup of tea - I like to see what the eye saw (that is not a criticism per say - just an opinion).

Maybe if I had the photoshop skills he has I'd feel differently.

He used shadow and highlight too a bit much maybe for your taste, but I dont think the shot is worth complaining about, it's good enough. It's at least exposed right, and has a non-blown out sky, and has good image quality unlike some which have been complained about lately. After he re-submits a level version of it I mean.

Charles - I may have toned that Alto Tower shot down a smidge but it's not really far off on how someone with good eyes would've seen it. It would've looked every bit as harsh through the viewfinder. I'm glad RP (from time to time) accepts such images vs no image of steam by Alto Tower from that specific event what so ever.

I think Ryan has made the best of a high sun situation. Sure, you'd live to catch a scene like this with 6PM light, but guess what? Perhaps the lighting angle is lousy at 6PM. Regardless, of the lighting, the operation happens when it happens. Sometimes you have to lean on the shadows/highlights tool if you want to document a rare operation and have the photo look something like a real human eye would see it. I'm OK with this shot. Is it stunningly beautiful? No, but it's about the best representation that modern photography can make under the circumstances.

Sure, it's a bit like an oil painting, but he's done it so well that I don't care! The scenery just pops. The only thing lacking in this shot is the subject itself. Dark diesels going away just don't do it for me. A nice, smokey steam engine going away would be tons better, but that's a pipe dream. More realistic would be a going-away shot of a trailing observation car.....better yet, a caboose with a conductor enjoying the air on the back platform.....if only modern freights still had cabooses. Realistically, Matthew would have been luckier if the train had been coming at him.
