Default emd -2

what makes a GP or an SD a -2 or -3, is it electrical upgrades?

Can't remember what -3 is, but IIRC, -2 designates the loco as having a turbocharger.

Turbos have been around since the 1930's - Alco and Baldwin locomotives were offered with them at that time. Turbochargers first appeared on EMD's when UP experimented with them on a few GP9's. First production EMD turbos were GP20's. For EMD, Dash 2 denotes solid state electronics beginning in 1972. Dash 3 is not a term applied by EMD but implies a Dash 2 with upgraded electronic equipment. It gets a little complicated because some "pre-Dash 2" locomotives have been upgraded over the years.
