Top Railroading Stories of 2010

CSX CEO Michael Ward shocks railfans everywhere by posting the following question on Trainorders forums: Does anyone know what CSX stands for? Fifty pages later, he replies, I know I should know, being the CEO and everything, but no one around the golf course seems to remember. A flame war later begins over the meaning of the X. And then when someone calls it the Chicken Sh*t eXpress, all members including Ward are banned from Trainorders. A follow up thread over why CSXs reporting marks are actually CSXT gets few replies.

Norfolk Southern announces a new heritage paint scheme black with white lettering. Company spokesperson Susan Bland said, We could think of no better way to honor our past rather than painting every single piece of rolling stock we own black. The first piece of rolling stock to get the heritage paint is a caboose used as a shoving platform in North Carolina.

In Indiana, a railfan will be arrested after being questioned by local police why he was shooting trains. Informing him that he was doing nothing wrong and that he was actually catching three graffiti artists in the act, the cop will accidentally delete his digital catches and break the camera. When the irate railfan yells at him, the cop beats him with his night stick, then shoots him. Ironically, all of this is caught by the dash board cam on the police car. At a press conference, the sheriff will start by saying, We live in a different world after 9/11

Al Class 1, Class 2 and Class 3 railroads merge to form Conrail. The paint scheme to be used is armour yellow and grey with red trim.

A group of angry rail photographers brings a Class action lawsuit against Railpictures for never letting any of our great shots get in their database. A judge throws the case out and suggests they just post to Railroad Pictures Archives..

And in a related story. Due to their under developed right of ways, CSX files a lawsuit demanding that shipping containers be shortened to 6 feet high, so that they can run double stacks without exceeding the 16 foot clearance on most of their tunnels through West Virginia, Kentucky, and Virginia

Finally that caboose will get some paint in a couple years! It's been pretty ragged for a long time now.

You forgot the strange twist of fate in the Indiana story that the railfan was actually a screener for rp.net and while he was being beaten he was heard screaming my camera is an artistic medium not a tool of terrorism.

I couldn't resist.

That's great!

Who said railfans can't make and take a joke?

That's about the best one I've heard in awhile. I can't wait until AB2 sees this.

In an even stranger twist of fate, the photographer won the case in court and was awarded a new Canon XZi, the first all-RAW format camera.

There will be only 3 railroads in 2010: CN, CP, and Alaska Railroad.
