Canon 24-105 3.5-4.5?

Anyone have any experience with this particular lens? Any comments about the image quality? I know it's not an L lens, but it seems like a very useful range. Just curious . . .

The 28-105 (you have it right in your text but you have a typo in the thread title) was my basic lens back in film days (Elan IIe) which I got rid of when I switched to digital because it was not wide enough. It was fine. I haven't used it on a digital body. If you can bump up a couple hundred bucks, consider the Sigma 17-70 which in my opinion has a more useful range and is quite sharp.

There is also the 24-85 which is similar in price and build quality, and might be a better focal length range for a crop sensor body than the 28-105.

I used to use it, then I stopped using it. It's a very meh lens, but if you can't afford better it's got pretty good bang for the buck. It's not very macro, though.

The Canon 28-105 F3.5-4.5 II USM is not a bad lens. At about $230 brand new this is one of the best bargains Canon offers as far as image quality goes. I've been using one for a few years now, usually one one of my film cameras but have also used it quite a bit on the 10D and 30D digital bodies. Wide open the image quality is pretty good, stop down to F5.6 and it gets even better. Its almost as good as my 24-105L F4 IS lens but at a faction of the cost. Its very light weight and fairly compact as well. It works well as a general purpose or walk around lens, though depending on your shooting style or particular location there may still be times you want to go a little wider. Overall its a great lens for the money.
