It's a very nice shot, but is way oversharpened. Everything from the rails to the handrails is really jagged.

I see the jaggedness in the handrails. He really should re-edit and resubmit... very cool. It's got a Jeff Wayne's 1978 War of the Worlds look to it (if you've ever seen the album cover... kudo's to those who know what I'm talking about).

Looking at his other shots, I also notice some problems. It seems as though he oversharpens his images and resizes them in poor software. Like Microsoft Paint or something. I learned a long time ago, the hard way, why not to use Microsoft Paint to resize images. On top of that, his images don't seem very high quality to begin with. Interesting subject matter though.

I was thinking about the artwork on the inner album cover... or was there a pull out? Either way, as a child, my father would play WotW (a record, BTW) in the evenings when we went to bed. Boy I loved it!

Anyways, some of the artwork is reminiscent of that shot, with the misty hills in the background.

Edit: MP3's, they're great, but sometimes the album is worth owning.

CD's started to kill off album cover art in the 80's. Now MP3's are administering the coup de grace.........shame

Try coming up with a truly iconic album cover post 1990

Just making sure, are you guys looking at the attachment in its full size? My Internet Explorer initially resizes (or compresses?) the image upon opening, giving it that "jagged" look.

If I look at the image in its full size using my best 'microscope eyes', I suppose I could really nitpick and find some really minor jaggedness around the cab and the handrails, but it's nothing like what the wrong-sized 'compressed' version looks like.

Compared to the accepted image that started this thread, Renaud's should be winner.

Just checking-

That goes without saying!

Opera doesn't resize images (at least not mine), so I did see it full rez. But to be fair, I've seen shots in the DB that have jagged lines... guess it depends on the screener, or more likely the volume they're dealing with (given that they have dayjobs and lives outside of this).

The question in my mind is a) what was the rejection reason given, and b) why didn't he fix it?

It looks over sharpened to me - halos on the catenary for one - but that is an easy fix, and it is a nice shot, so why wasn't it fixed and resubmitted, instead of ending up discussed here?

In another thread the photographer attached the link and it was rejected for 'Underexposed'. I can't speak for Mr. Chodkowski, but some people (myself included these days) *may* not bother fixing things and resubmitting when they feel the initial rejection wasn't correct. Who knows. I'm sure there are as many submission/refixing/reuploading/appeal processes as there are people that submit here.

Someone mentioned the 'ping-pong' effect in another post here somewhere. For me, I wouldn't bother trying again if that was my shot. I get to the point of 'If they don't want it, then it's their loss. I'm not going to bang my head into the wall trying to get it in.'

Somewhere you just give up and let it go.

Not to drag this one up, but would this be our first camera phone shot on RP?

Get a load of the EXIF data! Lat/Lon coordinates and all! Perhaps I should ditch all of my Nikons and get a REAL photographic appliance!
