Well, it's no secret here that I am really, really, REALLY anal about unlevel photos. So, I suppose I could take pride in that in some sick and twisted way.

I may be wrong, but I believe this thread was inspired by a shot of mine from four days ago that has less than 200 views, six comments and 13 faves. Travis thought the comment count to views ratio was a bit odd, so he was trying to think of another way to rate a photo in terms of the number of comments in relation to the number of views. I COULD post the picture here, but I don't want to unfairly skew his research.

Here's my stab at it..

10 points for acceptance
5 points for every hundred views
20 points for every favorite
40 points for every comment

150 points for a screeners' choice
400 points for a POTW
1000 points for an Editors Choice

500 points for 1st PCA
450 points for 2nd PCA
400 points for 3rd PCA
350 points for 4th PCA

-50 points for a derailment photo
-100 points for over-HDR'ing a photo
-500 points for putting a girl in it

The first thing you have to figure out is how much weight a view, favorite or comment should carry. For myself personally, I don't take much stock in favorites, as they are just a button click, and some people have THOUSANDS of favorite photos on RP. In my opinion, I would try something like this:

View=1
Favorite=3
Comment=15

I was going to give comment a 25, but then I remembered all the "Great shot" comments on plenty of pictures. If you really had no life and could eliminate the weak comments, and only use the ones where people put thought into what they were writing, they could be weighed higher.

How do you allow for on-going and increasing view count? Do you have a cut off time?? A week, month, ?? How about a seperate rating where viewers can vote on it. Like from 1 to 10 in catagories, such as composition, originality, number of bikinis in the shot, etc

Been thinking more about this............. Since views will continue, it will be hard to use the view count. It also is not really representitive of a good shot since everyone likes a train wreck. AQllow the first 100 viewers to vote on a 1 - 10 scale on different catagories. After 100 votes, close it and tally. That score then rides with the photo.

This system allows the best judges here to judge!

Actually, it doesn't. It just allows the first 100 viewers to judge. If I'm really busy at work or away for the weekend, I'll come back to hundreds of new photos added, most if not all, with over 100 views. We all don't have the time to sit and constantly refresh the site.

Also, you mention the train wrecks. I'm sure most of those people viewing the derailment shot will give it a 10 vote, skewing the results anyway.

The 100 is arbitrary. It could be 500, 1000, etc. The fact that you may miss out on some votes is really not a problem. You dont need to vote on every shot, every day. Others will and we will get a cross section, altough, my guess is the same folks will vote most of the time............. Just my thoughts.....

The 1/10/100 system still will not work for one reason. More views also equals better chances of more favorites and comments. So there will need to be a neutralizer that will take views against comments and favorites in a way that more views is worth more but also accounts for more favorites and comments generated by the views. Kinda like pass % and # of pass completions against pass attempts.
So far it's pretty hard to find an equalizer of sorts.

Legend:
Views=V
Favorites=F
Comments=C

Multiplication factors are denoted by Xn.

I tried 10*(V+(F*X1)+(C*X2))/(X1+X2) to no avail. This one worked for photos with fewer views/favorites/comments, but failed for photos with very high views.

I then tried (V+(F*X1)+(C*X2))/(V+F+C), which worked for photos with a lot of views/favorites/comments, but then any photo with no favorites or comments was automatically assigned a score of 1.

So, yeah. Hard.

I think comments and favorites need to be a big influence.

A formula like

RP Power Factor = (views)*(Comments*Favorites)/100

would favor images with a high number of combined Favorites and Comments and Views.

Example A: Image with 2000 views, 80 favorites, and 20 comments

RP Power Factor = 32000

Example B: Image with 2000 views, 5 favorites, and 10 comments

RP Power Factor = 1000

Images with lots of Views, Comments, and Favorites will be ranked higher. Derailment photos with a lot of views but few comments and favorites will rank low.

Oh, and I think if you are going to have people vote, only allow people with actual photos in the RP database to vote.
