These Rejects Aren't Making Sense

I just got both of these and I don't see either justified. What do the experts think?

The first one needs some off the left. It is also really busy and personally im not a fan of the location, but I think could work. If it is going to get on: Less on the left (just to the right of those white/orange tube things), less on the top (a little above the top of the coke sign) and maybe a tad less on the bottom. These are my thoughts anyway.

The second one is one of those screener roulette things I keep talking about...

I would guess too much + levels on I think by cropping it as I recommended, it would minimize a lot of that odd look. Or it may be a candidate for other photoshop intervention.

Nah, the second one just isn't appealing at all. Too much random stuff in the photo that clutters up the scene.

to me the traffic lights kill the second one just clutters it up 2 much. not a bad shot at all though makes me want to go out and shoot.

How is this rejection not justified? Are we looking at the same shot? There's too much sky, too much empty space on the left side, the nose of the locomotive is shoved into the bottom right corner of the frame and there's barely any room between the nose and the edge of the frame. It's not even close to a well-cropped shot.

People click on it to answer part two of your question. And I rather like it. The three red and silvers certainly add to the shot, but I like the rails trailing off too. I get what you mean though with the cloudy conditions.

Peter,

As much as you contribute in this forum and offer advice, I would expect you to know better.. Not sure if it's just me, but the first one appears very oversharpened, in addition to an unappealing overexposed sky. The cropping is off.

The second is too cluttered and the quality isn't the best.. A bit underexposed, too. Could've been done a bit better.

Just because someone contributes a lot in the forums and offers advice, does not mean their advice is correct or they know what they are talking about. With any forum, especially a photography forum, you're always going to have a few contributors who think they know everything and are always right.

I am not any expert but the first one to me seems way over sharpened.

The second one their is just to much stuff that draws my eyes away from the train. The water tower legs and the traffic lights to the upper left are the biggest distractions to me.

There's also another factor, Chris... which I think folks should be aware of. I think the younger kids are the least aware of this... it's much harder to see flaws in your own work than in others' work. Much the same as you need to have someone else proof your text if you want to make sure it's right, you need to have others point out the mistakes you don't see in your own work.

Take the bicyclist shot I posted yesterday... seemed like a slam dunk to me. Your point on why it didn't work was 100% spot on correct and in hindsight it seems obvious, but it wasn't obvious until it was pointed out to me.

Thanks, guys. I was having a hard time seeing it, to the tune of what Charles said. But now it seems obvious. This is exactly why I didn't waste another submittion on the first and an appeal on the second.

Number 1- Composition is off. The right is really busy and the left is dead. I don't see that one working out.

Number 2- Cluttered especially with the light signals awkwardly put in the frame. Also looks to be PIQ. Those type of "artsy" images must be very well composed and make me want to look at it. I don't really see that in the image.

Troy you fail to realize that this is not a site where the majority of viewers contributors are professional photographers. The majority here are rail fans, and people who love trains. They no doubt love spectacular artsy shots, everyone does, but for the most part if they see something cool they will click on it. This is why many seemingly professional photogs on RP get bent out of shape because a shot with cool power, or a derailment will get more views than an artsy photo will crappy power, for the most part. SC, POTW is generally for the better, artsy shots. To24 is usually whatever grabs the viewers attention, and usually cool power will do that.
