Default Finally got published, thanks rp.net

Well besides being ripped off by a company in India for 2 of my photos I finally got published in a magazine, Trains. It's going to be in the May issue and the photo was found by the editors going through rp.net's photos.

Congrats!

I'll look for it then. Actually, I'll probably forget all about it and then I'll be surprised to have seen it before. :

Very nice work, Dave. And if I understand your comment under the shot, this is a picture you almost didn't even bother TRYING to submitt to the site! Cool story and it goes to show that when in doubt, somteimes it's best to throw caution to the wind and let the screeners choose.

Congrats Dave. About time someone rewarded your talent. BTW I enjoyed going through your pix of the Cajon Pass trip last week.

And this is one reason why there's a screening process here; it makes finding quality shots for folks looking for them much easier!

Congrats Dave - I thought you may have been "published" already - great material here on RP. Seems an odd choice to have been selected in Trains?
What section? Gallery perhaps?

I had an editor at Railfan e-mail and ask permission to use my New Hope pan - that was quite a surprise since the last time I bothered trying to get published involved getting an enlargement made, researching the caption and sending it off the great void via snail mail. So nice to skip that step!

Incidently, I had two photos last month in Trains featuring the QJ's...
I don't think anyone noticed?

Looking forward to next Trains for the photo, congrats again!

Dave,

Congrats, though looking at the quality of your shots on rp.net, I am surprised your pictures aren't regularly featured in magazines.
What's the story with the 2 shots in India?

Congrats Dave & Mitch...

Just curious....what's the payment for publication in Trains? Is it solely a photo credit or is there $$ involved? Do you still retain the rights to your image (one-time use only)?

Thanks,
Bill

RE: Trains - one time use, payment (quick) varies depending on size and placement. I think a news image is $35, I had a small image along with a 1/3 of a page image which resulted in $135 - Keep in mind Trains is one of the more popular magazines.

R&R if I recall correctly is about $35 per news photo, not sure as I haven't been paid for the last 3 published photos...... s'up wit dat?

Railpace - here in the N.E. part of the country simply provides upon request a free copy of the magazine.

Not sure regarding the rest....

Gary Knapp made front page on trains plus a few interior photos, I'm sure it afforded him a nice night out, and more importantly a bit of well earned fame!

Feb 2007 - the cover has a night photo of Montreal, Maine and Atlantic taken by Gary Knapp. In addition to the author's photos on the QJ's, you might recognize another RP member, besides myself - Tom McNair.

I noticed that as well, Mitch. I still haven't gotten anything from them on the Cover One contest 2nd place shot from last year.

Readers Digest pays pretty well. They made a contact to one of our photographs back around Christmas time and that ended up paying $1,200.

a friend of mine and I had an article and photos published in the June 2006 Railfan & Railroad and just recieved our payment 2 weeks ago, inlcuding after contacting the magazine 3 times during the last 9 months. For my 3 photos I recieved $90, about twice what I would have expected to recieve. It was personally my first time having been published.

Dave, cool shot, I just got my new TRAINS earlier today. Im a little disappointed the way they cropped it though. I like your cropping version better.

Take Care!
