Default Breaking News: Heisler #6 to make historic run to Elkins.

The Board of Directors of the Mountain State Railroad & Logging Historical Association regrets to announce that the Steam Train to Elkins and Beverly, scheduled for July 9-12, has been cancelled.

With the current uncertain economic situation, our ticket sales were insufficient to the point where it was likely that we and our partnering sponsors would lose a significant amount of money if we ran the trips at this time.

Full refunds will be given to tickets already purchased. To those of you who bought tickets, we thank you for your support.

We hope we will be able to run these trips in the future, perhaps in 2010. If you would like to be placed on our mailing list for future railfan events please send your mailing address to rf@msrlha.org.

Due to a recent bridge inspection by the West Virginia Rail Authority on a small wooden trestle along the Daily Branch, the trestles load was reduced to 120 tons. The Cass Scenic Railroad's, Western Maryland Shay #6 weighs in at 165 tons loaded, and would exceed the new weight restriction on the trestle. Upon finding this out the Cass Scenic Railroad State Park came to the rescue by offering Heisler #6 as a substitute. The Heisler locomotive weighs in at about 90 tons loaded and can run at speeds up to 16mph.

Cass Scenic Railroad Heisler #6 is no stranger to making the long haul to Elkins, having made several trips to the West Virginia Forest Festival in the 1970's. It has been 32 years since the Heisler last made the trip to Elkins. Having spent most of its life in Rainelle, WV working for the Meadow River Lumber Co., the Cass Scenic Railroad bought the Heisler in 1968, it has been in Cass ever since.

As always we thank you for your support and we look forward to seeing you in July!!!
