Default UP planning new world record!

Found this yesterday............

OMAHA NEWS EXAMINER APRIL 1, 2009

OMAHA Is the Union Pacific Railroad planning on setting a new world record? An anonymous source within the organization told this reporter that that is exactly what is being planned.

With the current economic downturn, many of the major railroads have moved equipment to storage at various locations around the country. The Union Pacific is no exception. The Phoenix, Arizona yard has become one of the largest storage areas with plans for nearly 100 locomotives to be stored by June of this year. On the West side of Phoenix is the abandoned Southern Pacific rail line running over 125 miles from Phoenix to Wellton, Arizona. This single track line is being used as a storage track with currently over 2300 rail cars creating a train nearly 25 miles long!

"Given the proximity of this extraordinarily long train and almost 100 locomotives, it seemed a natural to try hooking them up for a real challenging pull!" says our source. He adds, "We are working out the details now, but hope to have the right balance of 'push and pull' worked out soon. Since the cars are empty, we believe we will be able to move this train to the mainline at Wellton once we get it moving." When asked about blocking traffic, he said "The road crossing will be closed prior to the event. With a train that long and an anticipated speed of 5 miles per hour, it will take over 5 hours for the train to clear a crossing. We obviously want Guinness World Records to document this event since it is not likely to ever be repeated again."

Just when this is planned is still unclear, but I am told a formal announcement will be forthcoming once all the details are worked out.

Wow! That would be a heck of a site to see. I hope someone gets some aerial video of that if plans follow through.

What part of "yesterday" do you not understand?

Methinks you are so preoccupied with looking for opportunities to write "fail" that you don't think clearly sometimes.

OK!! April Fools....

Now what if? Could such a train of that size be able to move AND stay together? I'm sure people playing with the law of physics would have a field day.

He found it yesterday, but posted it TODAY, 2 April. Passing off an April Fool's joke the day after April Fool's = FAIL!

Questions?

Original post at 0849L CST (1449 GMT). 1449 GMT - 12 hours = 0249L at the international date line (east side), 2 April. Across the international dateline, it was 3 April.

Pwned.

Maybe Ween's fail was actually an April Fool's joke.

Well, of course, you two are entitled to your opinion. I disagree. Simply the fact that people have responded negates your “fail” hypothesis. But the real April Fools jest here is not just the content of the fake press release but the release itself. JRMDC touched on it.

I wrote this release weeks ago while contemplating just such an unlikely scenario. It was my attempt at a little light-hearted humor and I wanted to share this crazy idea with you all. I hope you found it as amusing to read as I found it amusing to write.

While my post has been receiving "Failing" grades, I must remind you that my post said I found it YESTERDAY! I have included in this response a link to my original post of April 1, 2009. If you are not a member, you may have to sign up to see it but it is free.

It has caused some good, light-hearted fun. APRIL FOOLS !!

In a word Yes, but there would have to be many things to make it a success. #1 It would have to be warm & the airline would need to be virtually leak free. #2. You would need helpers on rear or train would tear in two for sure (unless I was running it LOL ) #3. It would need to be relatively straight track with no sharp curves. If all this were present then I think it could be done for sure, but I couldn't ever imagine anyone wanting to do it for real.
