It's my rule of thumb. I'm just saying what has worked for me in the past. Also, there are exceptions to most rules.

Well - I'd recommend a dog.

Don't shoot for RP, shoot for yourself!

There is no shortage of Larrys or engineer in cab shots here and fwiw the Larrys shot is better from a technical standpoint than the engineer one

This is true - but there is a difference (perhaps just in the mind of the beholder) between an image of railroading with a human at the center of it and a picture of a human who happens to be railroading - and I see that is the difference in Joe's image... he caught the latter.

Now, is that easily defined, like had he been pulled out 10mm more to make the operating stand more prominent? Not really, but there is something there to that. It is more about capturing the interaction between man and machine than it is about capturing man.

Who is Go and why are you swearing at him?

Something different everytime I see one of these Larry's shots. What's wrong with clicking on it?

You really want a rough time go over to jetphotos.net. RP is tiny compared to the sister site and to me basically every single shot looks the same over there.

Starnes and Kilroy know what they are doing.

These shots are very appealing to the locomotive fans out there (which is a good deal of what got me into the hobby). You click on them to play a game of Where Are the Flares and Is There a Cab Unit?

Dumb, no... that's an oversimplification based on your personal criteria for looking at a photograph. They are simply curious as to what is in there today.

I checked a similar photo from last year and not much has changed. The second row of locos, from the right side, has moved forward. Lester's shot of this site plus his others that were top shots of the past 24Hrs. have a hazy summer cast to them giving them a lack of contrast and clarity IMO.

I love the Larry's shots. Would love to be able to go there. Not sure what my shot has to do with it though. (Well, nothing, actually)

I'm honestly not certain why you all have such disdain for these... but it's all a matter of opinion so I won't try to change yours.

Cant speak for others, but to me, they are gimmick shots... like derailments, canoes, dogs, doors, pieces of paper, poop, dont know why people eat them up.

There you go again, Joe - trying to make this all about you and your photograph.

Joe, you wouldn't want this to be your destination, just a place to stop by on your way to somewhere else. This is one of the rustiest parts of the "Rust Belt".

Sorry for my part in furthering the derailment of this post.

I can't speak for everything else, but derailments are a reality. I worked for the railroad for twenty years and took every opportunity to photograph our 250 ton steam derrick in operation. I see a 250 ton steam derrick far less of a gimmick than the Spencer Streamliner event.

Because people are curious enough with what I call 'wtf shots' to click on them, they can't NOT click.... and this adds up to thousands, even tens of thousands of views.

It's the difference between these two nearly identical shots of mine. The first has major wtf factor and has a bit over 11,000 views. The second has next to no wtf factor and has a bit under 1,000 views.

There is the too lenient camp and the too strict camp. Some of you even play both sides. Which one is it?

I'm in the "if you don't like it, don't click on it camp!"

Fwiw I hung out with some of the best photos out there today and none of them are rp contributors. I have discussed stuff with people and I think everything around RP has just ruined the enjoyment for a lot of people. Seriously either don't let it get to you or say ef it and go strictly Flickr.

For me I could care less but rp is just such a hassle to fill out everything, shrink it, submit it and wait for acceptance. Meanwhile Flickr is instantaneous and we all self police ourselves anyway only uploading good or interesting stuff.

People give RP a hell of a lot of credit and blame. No web site can ruin anyone's hobby; those folks are doing it all by themselves.

Can you post some of those best photos you hung out with today? They must be some really cool photos if you were hanging out with them.
