Default Southern Pacific Oil Train

Looking for some information about the unit oil trains that the Southern Pacific used to run, I believe on a fairly regular basis, over Cajon Pass or Tehachapi, not sure which one. I'm trying to recreate a similar unit train in my personal N-Scale model railroad layout.

Roughly, how many tank cars were in the general consist of these trains ?

I understand that the SP would often use several locomotives split between head-end power, mid-train and end of train helpers to haul these trains through, up and over the passes. With this I can only assume that the average make up was somewhere in the neighborhood of around 70 to 80 cars.

Does the Union Pacific still run this train today ?

If anyone can give me some more detailed info regarding these trains I would greatly appreciate it.

I belong to a N Scale club and we had a guy who modeled this train, looked very awesome. The tank cars were not the exact same car, but whos looking. He used Intermountain DCC tunnelmotors, in both roman and speed scheme. He used i think 4 up front, two in the middle and 2 in the rear. His train, i want to say was about 50 cars long. The tank cars were Atlas 33000 gallon, black cars.
Train looked awesome.
Sometimes we modernized it with BNSF Kato SD70MACS. Or turned it into an Alaskan Oil train with Alaska Kato SD70MACS.

I belive they stopped running the train because the oil company installed a pipe line.

Thanks for the replies Sammy and Pat, now I have some good info to go on with my project. Great pictures of the layout with the trains runnin'. I appreciate it very much. My idea is similar to the one the Pat referred to, although I plan on using some custom Southern Pacific painted SD80MAC's for the the engines, I figure about 6 to 8 engines with 75-80 of the new ethynol cars that Athearn is coming out with should look pretty awesome.

Hey, I know it's not proto-typical but this is a model railroad after all.

Well in N Scale anything looks good. As long as you get the basic idea across it works. My main intrest is coal drags in N Scale. I got me a 60 car Atlas coal train. With 5 NS units up front.

I also got a 15 car Athearn and Atlas Automax train, not really the most prototypical thing because Auto Maxes gennerally dont travel in full out trains, they get mixed in with single cars too.

You might be intersted in looking at M y clubs website, i think you will enjoy it. We kinda do things more modern.
