Suggestions for shooting near Christiansburg?

I'm going to be in Christiansburg, VA this coming Monday accompanying the better half on a business trip. While she's in a conference during the day, I'd like to get out and catch some trains. Anyone have some good tips on where to shoot within a reasonable driving distance? I have to be back before dinner . . . .

Montgomery Tunnel, Elliston, and Shawsville are quite close. Radford and Pembroke are short drives as well. Search those locations on here for the views and maps to them. I wouldn't waste time going to Roanoke or Salem.

Also north is Lafayette where Samuel gets these shots. He has to stand on the bridge while traffic whizzes by, but it is a nice location.

That is one place where I would wear a vest and hard hat to look like a bridge inspector.

Everything that Loyd mentioned. In addition to that "Wabun" where the VGN crosses over the N&W you can get a nice shot certain times of the day. Be aware that the VGN is Eastbound traffic only unless there is a derailment somewhere. Both portals of the Montgomery tunnel are accessible if you know where to look.

And the bridge at Kumis IS dangerous, but nice shots can be had, just be careful.

There's a coaling tower worth shooting at Vicker.

The entire NRV between Radford and Glen Lynn is awesome and shootable. Many possibilities. Tracks on both sides of the river

ALso the VGN between Christiansburg and Wabun has lots of possibilities and favors morning light. The problem is getting a train there where you need it. That's always been my problem. Or weather... there's that. When I usually go up there (Fall) weather is horrible, so...
