Default Accepted on appeal

Would you believe yesterday's top shot was rejected at first.

http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=131527

It was shot with medium format, and was composed almost perfectly square. Well, the screeners didn't like that, so I had to actually cut off the rear of the train (at the top of the image) to get the image to be a 4:3 ratio.

It surprised me to know that it happens pretty often.

PF, JJ and myself and I sure plenty others as well have all had photos that were initially rejected for what were previously thought to be "uncorrectable" reasons, accepted on appeal, and come back to take top of the day in views.

I think JJ's might have been a photo of a derailed CSX track geometry train for being "unlevel" and I think he appealed on the grounds of "It's unlevel because it's derailed."

I can't remember what PF had his rejected for, but I think it was up a rainy/foggy day up on Sandpatch of an autorack train taken from Foley.

Mine was rejected initially for "poor lighting/cloudy/common power". I appealed on the grounds that the CSX unpainted GEVO's were not that common (I think less than a dozen are in primer) and were eventually going to be painted in YN3 as well. It was ultimately accepted and there ya go.

The "ugly duckling" becomes a swan. All in good fun though.

Default Top pictures

The top shots that are a result of interesting photography and not the wreck of the week or some unique equipment, often seem to push the rules yet remain good to the eye. I expect a number of the top shots were initially rejected or, most likely, had a screener thinking hard on yes or no. I remember reading publication guidelines for a magazine back in the days of film and realizing they were darn close to the instructions for a passport photograph. The Railpictures team allows quite a range of pictures - the good news in this case was a good picture did make it on a second try.

What makes it really funny, is the track geometry train went down that line as a result of a local train that derailed the day before.

How would you explain that to the FRA?

CSX: "Well we had a train derail there yesterday. So we sent the track geometry train in to investigate."

FRA: "And what were the results of the tests?"

CSX: *whistling nervously* "Well, the track geometry train derailed."

So you actually found no problems with the rails, other than a train or track car could not stay on them? Normal CSX track I would say.

Cool photos.

My most-viewed pic was originally rejected because the loco was nose-coupled. I appealed on the grounds of the rarity of the loco (EMD BL2), and that was how they were running it that day. Now it has over 2000 views and counting.

I've had two top shots of yesterday, and one top of last week, all were rejected at first.
