I'm fine with the screener adding comments along that line, on one condition - they sign their name to it. I have no issue with the "anonymous" screening method where we don't know who screens our photos on a regular basis, but if the screener feels he needs to make a comment like that, they should also stand behind it with their name, and not hide behind the keyboard.

IMHO of course. YMMV, and any other disclaimer type acronym you can throw at it.

I had no problem with the screener stating their preference. As to the newer version, it is better, yes, but still feels like it was embossed on metal to me (just not as poorly as the first).

What are you doing to those locomotives? Why do the power lines fade into nothing and have jaggies all over? Why is the nose of the loco so blurry?

I think we all take photos like this and try to salvage something out of a sub par image, most of us don't try to get it on RP though. Just too may issues IMO, let it go.

Okay, I'll bite. Why does this HAVE to be in B&W?

Did it look terrible to begin with and you're trying to save it with B&W?

Look at it at "full" size. It's just a bad shot HG.

I think the screeners comment was right on and wouldn't look at it like he's telling you how to process your images, but just giving you some time-saving advise. Black and white emphasizes the light, composition, pattern, and form better than color and is better saved for that use if the original shot had it to start with. Your shot lacks all of the above and would be much better in color except for the bad processing as mentioned. There's already a similar and better shot in the database, so why push a sub-standard shot.

Why are you even bothering trying to save that? It's awful. Garbage can.

I personally have had a problem with those trying to tell us to turn railroad photography into an "art form." It's fine for them to do so, I welcome it in fact, but what I do have a problem with is that the practitioners of the more "arty" shots, I have found, tend to look down their nose's at others who are shooting more "mundane" shots.
Railroad photography is what you make of it, but one way is not "better" than another, IMHO. Unless you have a pole right thought the nose of the engine! -SG

Correctly processed, I like the original in B&W IMHO.

Misread Dennis' post. Deleted.

I'll stop beating the dead horse now.

Geeze, Wyatt. We get it.

As to Dennis' post, he was using shorthand. He was saying "if it were correctly processed."

Either of them, really... But moreso the second edit. The first was "better."

Just to beat a dead horse, any of them are bad. You are starting off with a bad image to begin with, look at it in full size.

Like I said before, we all take shots like this and I would take the shot too, but we don't try to get them onto RP.

Agreed with Brent. Sometimes you just don't come away with what you wanted.

I guess Chris Kilroy didn't like yours. No auto-appeal for you!
