I think the change in image quality is due to improving technology. Entry level cameras and kit lenses can produce amazing shots in challenging conditions. The fact that a shot taken at ISO 1600 or 3200 can look as good as ISO 100 opens up huge possibilities.

I agree. Access to quality gear and the wealth of internet information such as here at RP, I would say are the two main reasons for the increase of overall photo quality that has occurred over the past 50 years.

Well, I have 7 photos on RP, all from 2013, so rather than post my entire iffy portfolio, here are my two favorites.

Though it's a wedgie, I like the placement of the clouds relative to the train and the dusting of snow all around.

There have been a lot of fantastic images share so far. For me, I only have 3 favorite images from 2013 that made it into the RP data base. My other favorites are on flickr. Here they are in the order they were accepted to the data base.

John Ireland- Your photos are incredible. I definitely look at your shots when I want to see good railroad photography.

Luke its good to see someone covering the Coast Line. Doesn't get much better than that.

2013 was a pretty good year for me as far as railfanning went, so it was hard to pick 7 favorites. I resorted to pulling them up in order of the most favorited and worked my way through, selecting ones I liked even if the favorite count for a few of them wasn't particularly outstanding. Here they are in order of appearance:

I had thought the sunset silhouette of the CP Holiday Train on the Parry Sound Trestle would do better than it initially did, the only reason it got over 3K views was because it got voted into a PCA position. Before that it had topped out around 15 or 1600, but like I said in the comments the fact that many of this site's premiere photographers gave it recognition was more satisfying than if it had made it into the top of 24, for instance. I think the issue there was that you can't really see what it's all about from the thumbnail, the lights decorating it aren't all that visible until the image is opened.
