How does this get by the screeners? Look at their PhotoID numbers. One would have showed up immediately before the other.

Same train, same light, vastly different processing. One looks bland, the other looks juiced. Reality was probably somewhere in between. Quite a difference in color with the bridge supports.

I think this is just a different thread than you may be thinking of. These seem to be remade fairly often

I decided to make an album for these times where we see the same scene and train from different photographers. If anyone finds more examples of this, please post them or let me know so I can add them to the album. I always find it interesting to see how different people compose and process a shot when presented with exactly the same opportunity and conditions.

I thought it was interesting as they came out together, maybe in the night. Also 67 has a lot of lean compared to 66, train is out of the curve so should be more like 66?

Bailey gets the nod there. However, why didn't he get the "similar to previous" rejection? It doesn't get any more previous than that!

Maybe too judgemental and hope he is not on this forum but I would consider the SC(#2) a fail? at least in comparison. Besides some other things the signals and sky cry out for a vertical.
I was really happy to see the Austrian photo make the SC, this not so much.

Ahh, you beat me to it. I agree completely. The first image is composed better, and I think he should have been awarded a SC before the second one did.

But do you notice that Elijah torched the heck out of the nose of the train in his shot vs the other shot where that dude kept it "real". Yeah, Elijah's composition is better, but his photoshop abilities are also better to a point where his shot isn't reality. That's my honest opinion.

Why do you think it doesn't look real though?
He got a little better exposure and the brights aren't clipping in the lights. It's also most likely a different camera, different lens, the shots were taken from different angles and locations, and the train was at a different ANGLE to the lens in both shots, that influences the capture too
Yeah, he photoshopped the shit out of it, but to say it doesn't look real is ridiculous.
I prefer the composition of the second shot, it shows the background much more, whereas the first shot literally frames just the signals and the train, and not much more. He left a lot more on the table IMHO.
The nose of the locomotive is pretty washed out in the second shot though

#2 is a fail? Is that a joke? Jesus people.

It's fine for them to do so, I welcome it in fact, but what I do have a problem with is that the practitioners of the more "arty" shots, I have found, tend to look down their nose's at others who are shooting more "mundane" shots.
Railroad photography is what you make of it, but one way is not "better" than another, IMHO. Unless you have a pole right thought the nose of the engine! -SG

I mean, I personally don't like it, but hey, the Screeners did and plenty of other people did, and that's what matters.

No, Bob was asking a question. Otherwise, who stated it was a fail?

I'm gonna disagree on the compositions - the first one is too tight; in the second one you have the pole line, mesas in the background and the rails provide a better lead-in. The blown headlights are a negative, however.

I've yet to see a photo from Elijah that wasn't beaten to death in photoshop. He also loves to repair the noses in editing since Beech Grove doesn't. I like the second one better.
Drew, I hope you are recovering well. Take care!
