Default Search Help - West Hamlin, WV

All last week I was on a motorcycle trip through KY, WV, VA and TN. Didn't have time for any train photography, but on Wednesday we were traveling down WV 10 from Huntington to Princeton WV, and I saw an old coaling tower in West Hamlin, WV. Just tried to do a search on RP for pictures from West Hamlin so I could get a better look at the tower, and couldn't find any. I know we have a lot of folks here who shoot in WV.

Are there no pictures on RP from West Hamlin, or are my search skills just not up to snuff?

Should be a 150-200 ton barrel style similar to what is still in place at Balcony Falls (Glasgow), Va. I don't mess around on the Logan sub too much, because the Coal River sub is more attractive, and easier to get around on. I may have a photo of it in the archives, so I'll try to look them over tonight for you.

I did not have a photo of the tower in West Hamlin, but I have attached a shot of the one in Balcony Falls, Virginia that is of the same design.

That's the one that is just outside of Beckley on the piney creek sub, right?

I never had any luck actually seeing anything move on the piney creek, on csx or NS, I believe csx abandoned their track not far past that yard and use NS to get up the winding gulf.

I'm sure you already know this, but there is an out of service diamond up that way with an interesting semaphore up where the abandoned csx track begins (eccles I think)

Brent,

Drop me an email and I'll forward you a photo of the West Hamlin tower that I took a couple of years ago.

Here's the one at Raleigh:

They are currently installing new welded rail on the Piney Creek, and CSX still serves the mine at Eccles, and are supposed to be serving a "new" loadout in Affinity. CSX lost the contract for coal at Helen, so that is an NS only location now. And yes, it's a horrible location to catch trains at

I know, sad isn't it? But, I did get a lot of good scouting in!

Thanks Chase, email sent.

One other interesting thing I saw on this trip was Wednesday morning an Amtrak train went by the Hampton in Huntington where we were staying. It had a regular Amtrak car or two, then three or so private cars. The last one was a stainless observation type car with "Louisville and Nashville" painted on it. The others went by so fast I couldn't read what was on them.

The L&N car should have been "Royal Street", which is a very nice looking PV. Both Cardinals are quite popular for PV runs up to and from DC and NYC.
