Nikon, Canon, who cares?! The fact of the matter is that if you want either brands "Pro" glass, you need to take out a second mortgage.

But had IQ been the sole determining factor I would have gone the 24-70 route.
Great. Thanks for that. Now you have me thinking about spending MORE money.

The 24-70 has always been on the radar for me. If the image quality is that noticeable between the 24-105 and the 24-70, I'd probably just wait, save the money and go with that.

Depends on the focal length. The wider stuff Nikon kills Canon but the longer stuff Canon is as good or slightly better. 95% of the users won't notice the difference though.

Hmmm . . . Fix Or Repair Daily vs. Constantly Having Every Vehicle Recalled Over Lousy Engineering Technology? I pick neither!

Nikon's ED is not the identifier of their equivalent to Canon's L lenses. Nikon simply does not an a line of lenses similar to Canon's L series. Nikon just has 'pro' glass (f/2.8 ) and slower glass with an assortment of features. ED is just Extra-low Dispersion glass and has nothing to do with a 'luxury' line of lenses. Some quite bad lenses have ED.

Chevy does one thing right: the Corvette. Best domestic car I ever owned.

I'd agree on the 200-400, but I do love my 100-400. Very capable lens.

Ah, ok. Almost every one of my shots in the database are with my 100-400, and I haven't had any soft issues with it, so that's why I questioned your comment. I guess I got a good one.

Walter,
I have gotten very inconsistant results from Sigma gear. I have a cheaper and slower model that is an excellent example. I also (had) one of their pro-line of lenses that was the most terrible lens that I have ever seen, example, it was extremely soft at all focal lengths and aperatures, also, it gave the wrong distance readings to my cameras meter between 50-70mm. This in turn gave a bet-the-bank reading that was 3-stops underexposed. If you would stray from the brand name, make sure they have a great return policy if you find that the lens underperforms.

Default Canon 24-105L

Ive paired the 24-105L with my 40D and I normally shoot F8 to F10. Its incredibly sharp and the colors are perfect. Im so happy with that setup that I now want to add another 40D and the 100-400L IS. But the key word there is want . Oh yes Toyota Tacoma lol.

NO SIGMA!!! I wouldn't recommend ANY Sigma lens to ANYBODY. I have the 17-70. I'm extremely unhappy! The TERRIBLE autofocus has ruined many, many shots.
