Default Railroad photography goals or plans for 2010?

What are some of your plans or goals of the new year?

To stop being a doofus.... I know, it sounds funny at first, but I am serious. I am so tired of continuing to make the same mistakes in 2009 that I made in 1976. And my biggest plan is to start taking deep breaths and thinking things through a little more.

That being said... I also plan...

1) To visit one foreign country...

2) To visit Portola

3) To do a comprehensive New England trip... really nitty gritty, get all the freight operations in

2010: To expand out of this area. More photography in different cities and states.

Also, I want to find areas that may have been ignored or missed by other photographers.

Me as well.

I personally have had a problem with those trying to tell us to turn railroad photography into an "art form." It's fine for them to do so, I welcome it in fact, but what I do have a problem with is that the practitioners of the more "arty" shots, I have found, tend to look down their nose's at others who are shooting more "mundane" shots.
Railroad photography is what you make of it, but one way is not "better" than another, IMHO. Unless you have a pole right thought the nose of the engine! -SG

I've already got my big trips planned out this year:

February: Pete Lerro's N&W 475 photo charter at Strasburg
June: Rail Days at Spencer, NC
September/October: Colorado steam trip (D&SNG, C&TS, SL&RG)

Will also be looking out for the UP steam schedule to see if they come 'close' this year(Arkansas or Missouri). This could also be a big year for some of the steam tourist lines in my area as they may have newly restored engines running next year (SOU 154 at the KXHR, SOU 630 at TVRM), which I would want to document, and I would also like to make a return trip to the Louisville, KY area, for the L&N 152 and the various local shortlines.

I've covered my local area (north Ala.) very well over the last few years and haven't been getting out as much, but I'll keep an ear open for news of office car specials and the like.

Get some photos on from England, and don't lose the RAW files this time.
Oh hell, maybe I'll submit something tonight anyways.

2009 was a high point for me, so topping it will be a challenge.

I'm hoping to have closer relationships with the people who railroad. That way I can have a deeper understanding of the whole process and hopefully garner better images.

  1. FINALLY get to see some steam at Nevada Northern
  2. Catch the last operation of CP 2317 before she dies.
  3. Get back to the Colorado Narrow Gauge.
  4. Get to see Sierra #3 run before I die.

I'll probably think of some more.....

I've just started working towards becoming a rules qualified brakeman at Osceola & St. Croix / Jackson Street Roundhouse / Minnesota Transportation Museum. I'm thinking that some more advanced understanding of the operational aspects of railroading will improve my photographs.

Other goals include making it out to Chicago for CRPA this spring, and hopefully making a long weekend trip or two to see something interesting... Northern Minnesota, Powder River Basin, Iowa Traction, more snow fighting, who knows?

My first goal was simple -- to get a shot of the trolley running along River Street in Savannah. I somehow never got to this fantastic city while the NS Rambler rolled these rails. But I was very hopeful to get some creative shots January 1st of the trolley.....

http://www.flickr.com/photos/joethephotog/4237742052/

Alas, it was out of service. A sign said it would be that way until "January, 2010." As my son said, "But it is January, 2010!"

I don't expect my financial situation to improve too drastically this year, so my plan and desire is to get better with the technical stuff and to find new and different angles and vantage points on the same tired old scenes I've been shooting in and around Columbia and South Carolina. Oh, and to win the lottery!

Last year I set a goal to improve my photography, and to land a PCA. At least I landed 3 PCA's..

This year; improve my photography, and to nab an SC, or POTW.

Already have three big trips planned before July 4th. My #1 photography goal this year is to get some decent shots of the last few space shuttle launches, so I'll be able to check off some southeast shortlines during those trips. I'm also starting to formulate our plans for things to do on our way out to and back home from the CRPA conference in Chicago.

Having covered steam, both big and small, pretty throughly the last few years, it's time to get back to covering modern locomotives and knocking off some photo opportunities that will be disappearing, like little-used lines and locomotives being replaced (MARC Geeps and any Conrail-painted power). Also high up on my list of shots to get now are the movable bridges and grade crossings on the NEC in Connecticut.

There's plenty of shots within a half hour of my house that I still haven't nailed yet, plus my coverage of southern Jersey operations is lacking, so I hoping for plenty of sunny Fridays once we get toward spring. And lastly, with one photo charter at Strasburg already planned, and plenty of other options being discussed, I'm sure I'll be lugging around the Lerro Productions lights a few times this year.

I've got two trips planned for 2010: Pennsylvania and Chicago. I imagine I'll take a few trips to Southern Michigan as well as knocking a few more Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana shortlines off my list.

I would also like to bag an award of some type in 2010. My photographic skills just didn't advance enough for that in 2009.

I'll keep my goals low - I want to get more snow action this spring. I'd also like to shoot some street running and the IAIS GEVO's.

1) Keep learning to post-process my photos. My skills are kinda lacking since I came over to the Dark Side in June.

2) Get away from my normal haunts, and start visiting some new places. Since I live in Massachusetts, the D&H and River Line are close enough to throw my tent in the trunk and take off for a (hopefully long) weekend in the spring or fall. I'll shoot more GEVOs, as long as I shoot them somewhere else. I have a few things in far northern New England I'd like to see as well.

3) Shoot CSX on Washington Hill again. Its only 90 minutes away, yet for some reason or other I haven't been up on the hill since high school (and I'm almost two years out of college).

4) Ride more often. One of these days I'll do the Amtrak circle trip Boston-New York-Albany-Boston. Still some MBTA lines I have yet to ride too.

No big trips planned, but TrainFestival will be hard to beat. Railfan's Weekend at Cass is tempting, depending on how things go with work.

Beyond that, I have a lengthy Railfan Bucket List, but 2010 probably won't be a year in which I check off a lot of items.
