Good Use of or Feeble Attempt at Creativity?

I'm looking for some feedback on this photo. For what it's worth, the train is NS 685 (empty coal from Baltimore, MD to the Reading and Northern in Reading, PA) stopped at CP Wyomissing Junction.

If you were to shoot it again, time it a little better, catch it a fraction of a second earlier so that the pilot of the engine does not crowd the sign.

Timing was not the issue as the train was stopped. I snapped off about 8 photos, trying to get the best combination of focus and framing. I'll take another look at the others and see if another one jumps out at me.

Nick, I agree with what Janusz said, don't have a foreground subject incidentally cutting off a tiny bit of an engine - Not a happy composition. Also, the sign itself seems a tiny bit soft, but that might be the hair in my eyes O_O

Hmm, hadn't noticed. I am well known for over-posting an entirely different sort of shot.

That is my one real shallow DoF shot that involves a train passing, so I have no other choices when that is the subject matter. But shallow DoF is always a good thing to try:

I like your shot. I've tried a few of this type myself but haven't achieved the kind of results I'd wanted. Still working out the bugs I s'pose. Example attached.

Thanks to all for your comments. I'll have to give this photo another go the next time I'm out in Reading. The rest of the stuff I took either didn't have a decent depth of field or was just bad (worse than this photo) framing/composition.

I think I'll start to look for this type of shot to use as something different.

I'd been wanting to catch a train here for a while in good light. Most of the time, the sun is on the other side of the tracks when I see one sitting here. I shot a few typical wedgies of this train and had to fight the urge to load it instead of this one. The wedgie was perfectly exposed and tack sharp, not to mention a GP40-2 in YN1.
