Default Possible Stolen RP Photos?

Just thought I'd bring this YouTube video to your attention. This is for the sake of the possible "victim" photographers. Now, I can't say for certain that these photos are not his, but it doesn't seem like it. In the video caption, he says that he gathered them from RP, but in the comments for the video, he says that he took them all. If this is a mistake, then I stand corrected. Just thought I'd let you guys check it out.

The opening shot is Joe Hinsons im pretty sure and i notice one of my friends shots in there. I posted a comment to clarify whether he is claiming they are his photos. I dont have a problem with this sort of thing if the video creator acknowledges that they are not his photos, but im not sure on this one.

Nice find, Rich. I recognized a few locations and decided to start pulling out the RP shots, so we can see which photos "NS2622" has taken.

I recognized the drawbridge over Sandusky Bay at 1:24 and 1:26. Let's look at the shots:

Oh look. Two shots, and already two different photographers, neither of which live in the South as the YouTube poster claims. SHOCKER.

Of course, you can't have a stolen RP video without an AB2 shot, and we get one at 2:23.

Go check for your own shots, cause I'm sure it won't be up for much longer.

But wait, there's more. The silhouette of a signal and train at sunset bothered me, because a few days ago on TO, a thread was started about sunsets at Sandcut on Techachapi Pass and the location looked similar. Sure enough, he swiped Darren Megowan's shot, a PotW and #1 PCA, no less.

/To all those planning on stealing photos, at least try to make it difficult to figure out you took them, like maybe, uhhh, don't take Photos of the Week, maybe.

Wow - I'm in good company...

Recognized this one right off at 1:49 in the video:

Haven't even finished watching it yet - plenty of others that look to be likely from here... (and some that obviously aren't! - maybe those are "his own")

Michael

EDIT:

Just thought of a really simple way to find rp.net shots - on ones where you can make out the lead unit number just plug in the reporting marks into the search - at 2:05 in the video is CSXT 5286 - sure enough, the first one to come up when searching here by those reporting marks:

And at 2:10:

etc, etc...

I agree with Nikos; As long as it is made clear that the photos are not his, and some one else's fine work, I have no problem. I see it as a good 'exposition' so to speak of other's good work. But once you take credit, you've crossed the line.

In a way I slightly agree with you. But if you use photos or other media that is not your own, at the very least you should at least credit everyone!! (Not to mention maybe ask them in the first place). I do not care what so ever if some one uses my photos in a video, if they would only ask me first.

Well, the person is to my eye pretty clear in saying the photos are not his:

I disagree with the more general view of Violet and Nikos, however. An 'exposition' without either permission or attribution, and with removal of the copyright bar that is on every RP shot, is more like theft to me.

I agree - I'm pretty open with the use of my shots when asked but the lack of permission and attribution is why I filed the complaint. If you don't defend your rights, you can lose them...

But then how do you explain his statements in the comments (the original video poster is NS2622):

Quote:
unicornplasma13 (3 months ago)
did u take all these

NS2622 (3 months ago)
i took those photos iwith my friends in the summer of 2008

nikosjk1 (1 hour ago)
To clarify, are you saying you took all these photos? Because you definitely did not, i recognize quite a few of them as shots others took.

He must have a lot of friends with pictures on rp.net that don't remember him.

I don't! I can't!

Looking more closely now, I would suspect his original description was not the same as his current one. Just a guess.

Don't forget that he probably didn't get permission to use the song from Pink Floyd either

Don't be so quick. He took all the photos. He may have written that song too.

I watched the video...... I have always said if you dont want your photos stolen, dont post them on the internet............ I found many more by searching railpictures. This one is 6 mins long but guy says he did not take them........... No matter, they are still "stolen".....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RObx5Z8aC3w

So, what do all think? Acceptable if they take no credit and give none to photog? I think they should credit photog or else dont take them! Just my not-too-humble opinion

I get fed up when I read comments like that. I see them all the time. It's like saying, "She had it coming for wearing that short skirt." We should be able to post our pictures online without having them stolen. In fact, the biggest copyright violation I've been involved in did not start with a picture on the internet.

Hell, what would you say if someone stole an 8X10 off your wall? If you don't want your photos stolen, don't put them on your wall. If you don't want your car stolen, don't park it in your drive way. This could be a game. Ppost absurd statements and compare them to if you don't want your photos stolen....

Yea, it has been said before. I know cause I have said it before. I do not think it is right nor do I think it is acceptable. But to think it wont happen is just naive. Reality is that the statement is true. If you want to make a reasonable comparison, try comparing it to taking that 8x10 and putting it out on your front lawn in view by 1000's of people. Most will look & walk on, but sooner or later, somebody is gonna take it and hang it on their wall. Just the way it is. Not right, just is.

DEFINITELY a copyright violation. Someone should report him to youtube. I saw at LEAST two photos in there from other photographers I know. Good job pointing this out UCRP93
