It's pretty obvious that Florida railfanning sucks.. There are only so many options.. Take a look at what Bob Pickering posts..

All you have is CSX and the FEC.. I'll take the Midwest anyday!

I hated the south... too hot and humid. I will never willingly go to FL, no matter how awesome the railfanning is.

Anyways, I was driving along Lake Ontario heading to the tracks Saturday (about -6C) and saw a dedicated fisherman sitting at the waters edge, waves brushing his feet, spay in the air, bundled up tight in camo clothing, looking very much frozen given his posture, with his line cast into the ice water. Fishing is a normal, accepted past time, but railfanning is weird? Right...

Well, you never have to worry about that becoming a reality.

But I will take the heat, humidity and mosquitoes over snow, ice and fat chicks who may or may not look as fat in a parka and have all their teeth

This statement is so particular that I believe it is based on some actual life experience.

Do enlighten us won't you Troy?

Attractive women do not wear parkas... that is the tell right there. See parka, walk away.

Attractive women flaunt it, fat chicks can't hide fat... unless you are drunk; then it's your fault.

Surely, you can't be serious:

Fine, if you walk away, I'll be more than happy to walk toward.

When it's -65 everyone wears parkas. After a while you can tell who is big and who isn't, even in a parka. Besides, at -65 nobody stands around outside trying to pick up girls. They're smart enough to go inside where its warm and the smart men are waiting to hit on them.

Here is an actual railfan that has made this list and pokes fun at us including himself . This may be 3 years old and some may have seen this in their own searches, but I had to just put the link and scroll down to # 139 .

Hope you get a laugh or two out of the list. Some good links in the actual "Idiot Railfan" home page and a RailPictures contributer too! Hey Mark have you read this thread?

Never saw anyone really take off their parka in the stop and rob. Bowling alley, theater, store, coffee shop, etc. is much better. Or just make sure you already have one before winter starts.

I personally have had a problem with those trying to tell us to turn railroad photography into an "art form." It's fine for them to do so, I welcome it in fact, but what I do have a problem with is that the practitioners of the more "arty" shots, I have found, tend to look down their nose's at others who are shooting more "mundane" shots.
Railroad photography is what you make of it, but one way is not "better" than another, IMHO. Unless you have a pole right thought the nose of the engine! -SG
