Softly the picture goes

I'm at the toe of the learning curve when it comes to digital processing, so maybe someone can offer advice.

I have a collection of Kodachromes that I want to digitize. I've been offering up some samples to RailPictures only to be rejected for "undersharpened" photos, such as the one above.

There's nothing wrong with the focus of the original. The softening appears to be happening in the scan. I can Unsharp Mask to death, but are there other setting I can adjust to improve the focus?

My setup: Nikon CoolScan 500ED -> Silverlight 8 -> (Photoshop). All on an iMac running OS 10.7.

Here is a possible cropping that looks better, to me at least. I also boosted saturation and contrast while lowering brightness to improve the appearance.

Does the scanning software have a "calibrate" function? You might also search the web for information regarding the scanner for issues related to focus, etc.
