Default remote control unit?

I was told taht this photo that was recently accepted is of a remote control unit because of the lights on top. is that true? heres the pic... http://www.railpictures.net/viewphot...wcomments=true

That is an RCU.BNSF usually puts red decals on each side of the engine that say "Remote Control Equipped".

That doesn't mean its a remote control unit, it could be simply a unit with a strobe light. It probably does a lot of yard work, but just because it works in the yard doesn't mean its remote controlled.

It's an RCU. Ex-Southern locomotives didn't have strobes then, and didn't when they became NS.

Yeah, it's an RC unit. NS is currently upgrading many of their GP38-2's (And I think some SW1500's and MP15DC's, correct me if I am wrong) with RC equipment. I have a photo of one but I don't have it scanned right now.

Ryan, I see you've been to Wyomissing. Great place, I never caught a train in good light though. Seems like you get all the westbounds in the morning and the eastbounds in the afternoon.

BTW: Is it me or does that thing still have class lights?

I think it's important to point out, that just because it has a strobe light isn't enough to confirm that it is an RCU. I've got a picture of an NS GP38 hi-nose that has a strobe like this one but is NOT an RCU. Unfortunately, it's not RP.net material or I'd post it.

The best indicator is to look for the various antennae that are required for the locomotive to communicate with the belly-pack.

I've been an engineer for Norfolk Southern since June 1st. 1999 (prior to that Conrail) and have NEVER saw a Norfolk Southern unit with strobes that was not remote equipped. There was 1 Conrail unit with a yellow snow plow & white strobes that worked an oil refinery in the mid to late 90's, but that is the only CR or NS unit I know of that ever had strobes that was not remote equipped. I guess it is possible, but I have never seen it.

Default Lights etc...

One other thing I thought of regarding lights: There were several NS GP38'S that had an "APU" Auxiliary power unit installed in them by CSX. These units had a single yellow rotating type light located around the dynamic brake blister that would activate if the "APU" failed. The APU is a small engine located near the air compressor that activates when the prime mover shuts down. The APU keeps water warm, electrical system charged, and some other stuff I can't remember. I have noticed that NS has removed most of the rotating lights in the units equipped with APU's.

The strobes have been found useful for yardmasters to spot engines that seem to be hiding off in a corner somewhere when they're supposed to be out bumping cars.
