I can't see the first two getting past the screeners. As you say, going away shots. Same for the last one - too many trees, going away shot, and we can't even see that much of the train.

The third one definitely has potential though. Needs some cropping, and maybe a little contrast, but I could see that in the database.

None of them are bad, but only #3 fits in with what they are looking for.

Maybe #3, but it's unlevel, overexposed, high sun. The rest, no.

Why would they send you a birthday wish? They have something against you, right? Afterall, you don't think they even try on your shots anymore. Although I still don't know what that means. Agree with Troy on what he said about the shots. #3 is your best chance, but it's a slim chance itself.

The Happy Birthday is automatic.

As for the pictures, you can have a going away and a coming to, and I think the San Juaqin is running cab forward. What might hurt you is nose light on the cab car's front.

The Montana picture has a chance.

Me on the other hand, I didn't get rejected, and even got a present from NS while spending my birthday with family in SC!

P.S I meant to shoot more 'nose on', but oh well not my complete best, but I love the scene, and power!

Am I the only one that thinks it could use a little more work? It seems too red and overexposed, slightly. Is this better?

I'm with you Peter. It seems at least a little over exposed and under sharpened.

For the record, it seems he made no changes at all prior to submitting that photo and I am kind of surprised it got in as-is.

Why do you come here and ask if you are not going to follow through on the suggestions.

Because its a free country.

I personally have had a problem with those trying to tell us to turn railroad photography into an "art form." It's fine for them to do so, I welcome it in fact, but what I do have a problem with is that the practitioners of the more "arty" shots, I have found, tend to look down their nose's at others who are shooting more "mundane" shots.
Railroad photography is what you make of it, but one way is not "better" than another, IMHO. Unless you have a pole right thought the nose of the engine! -SG
